Schwarzhäusern is a municipality in the Oberaargau administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Schwarzhäusern has an area of 3.8 km2 (1.5 sq mi). Of this area, 53.6% is used for agricultural purposes, while 32.8% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 10.7% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (2.9%) is non-productive (rivers or glaciers).[3]

Schwarzhäusern lies in the Oberaargau in the Swiss plateau north of the Aare.

At the southern end of the municipality the Aare has a reservoir created by the hydroelectric plant of Wynau.

Demographics

Schwarzhäusern has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 480.[1] As of 2007, 1.5% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 11.8%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (97.5%), with French being second most common ( 0.9%) and Serbo-Croatian being third ( 0.9%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 53.6% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (21.7%), the FDP (9.1%) and the local small left-wing parties (5.7%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 21.9% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 60% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 18%. In Schwarzhäusern about 80.8% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Schwarzhäusern has an unemployment rate of 1.41%. As of 2005, there were 18 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 8 businesses involved in this sector. 18 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 6 businesses in this sector. 66 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 9 businesses in this sector.[3]
