Schalunen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Schalunen has an area of 1.4 km2 (0.54 sq mi). Of this area, 57.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 30.7% is forested. The rest of the land, (11.4%) is settled.[3]

Demographics

Schalunen has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 380.[1] As of 2007, 10.7% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 6.4%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (95.1%), with French being second most common ( 0.6%) and Italian being third ( 0.6%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 51.4% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (14.9%), the Green Party (13.1%) and the FDP (11%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 26.6% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 63.4% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 10%. In Schalunen about 81.8% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Schalunen has an unemployment rate of 2.05%. As of 2005, there were 11 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 5 businesses involved in this sector. 21 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 5 businesses in this sector. 9 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 5 businesses in this sector.[3]
