History

Like Gentle Giant or the Bee Gees, the three members of Sanullim are brothers. Kim Chang-wan(김창완, vo. gt., 1954~), Kim Chang-hoon(김창훈, bs., gt., 1956~), Kim Chang-ik(김창익, ds.1958~2008).

Being the university students, the three brothers had no intention to have music as their major carrier but music was just one of their hobbies.

Before debut, they formed a band called, '무이(Mui)' just as their hobby. In 1977, a college band called "Sand Pebbles" won The MBC College K-pop Festival with Kim Chang-hoon's song, '나 어떡해(What Shall I Do)'. Mui was innitially nomiated at the first place with their song, '문좀 열어줘(Please open the door)' but was not qualified because Kim Chang-wan had already graduated university. Gaining much confidence, the band looked for music agency and changed the name of the band into 'Sanullim' by the manager'sdemand. The band released their first album in December 1977. The album much impact to the Korean music secene and became a great hit.

The music they played in their first album was something the people had never heard before. The people were absorbed with the psychedelic/hard rock sound the band produced. The great impact they brought resembled that of Sex Pistols which also made their debut in 1977. Sanullim's appearance in the music secene was also dramatic and significant because they vitalized the Korean music secene which was much devastated after several major musicians were arrested for having marijuana around the middle of 1970's.

During 1977-1984, they released 10 or more albums and helped other musicians. And with K-pop retrospective boom(1990s) their all the albums reissued and tribute album was released. They had performed many concerts until the breakup.

Kim Chang-wan has been actively performing as a musician, actor, writer and broadcast celebrity. He was one of the villain roles in the hit South Korean Medical drama, White Tower and has just finished filming The First Shop of Coffee Prince as his role as Mr.Hong.

All the SanUlLim members actually do not reside in Korea at the moment as Kim Chang-hoon resides in Los Angeles with his family and Kim Chang-ik resides in Vancouver, BC with his family.

Sanullim has just performed in Seoul on July 5 and the 6th for their 30th anniversary and will be releasing a vol.14 album within next year. By end of 2006 they will be touring through Korea including major cities such as Pusan and Kwang-Juu.

On January 29, 2008, drummer Kim Chang-ik was killed in a work related accident in Vancouver, Canada. Kim Chang-wan announced the end of the band after hearing on his brother's death.
