The Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies of Pisa (Italian: Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento Sant'Anna) is a special-statute public university located in Pisa, Italy, operating in the field of applied sciences.
The Sant'Anna is part of the Pisa University System, together with the Scuola Normale Superiore and the University of Pisa.
It is one of the three officially sanctioned special-statute universities in Italy i.e. it has 'university status', being part of the process of Superior Graduate Schools in Italy (Grandes écoles)[1] or Scuola Superiore Universitaria.[2]

The present-day Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies is the descendant of several institutions modeled after the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. The Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, also known in Italian as Scuola Normale (English: Normal School), is a higher learning institution in Italy. It was founded in 1810, by Napoleonic decree, as a branch of the École Normale Supérieure of Paris. Since its foundation it has operated a highly selective student admission procedure, and its main goal was, during that period, essentially to form the best college. Recognized as a "national university" in 1862, one year after Italian unification, and named during that period as "Normal School of the Kingdom of Italy". As of 1922 until 1943, the philosopher Giovanni Gentile reformed the Scuola, gave it formal autonomy and sought an expansion to other disciplines, with the creation of the Collegio Mussolini per le Scienze Corporative (1931) and the Collegio Nazionale Medico (1932). The new colleges were later merged in the Collegio Medico-Giuridico,[3] which continued to operate (in the fields of law and medicine) under the jurisdiction of the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa.[4][5][6][7][8][9]
The present structure of the School was established in 1967 (as the Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari e Perfezionamento) by merging the Scuola per le Scienze Applicate A. Pacinotti (founded in 1951) and the Collegio Medico-Giuridico. The new institution, while still committed to the model established by the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, was administered by the University of Pisa. In 1987 the School acquired complete independence (Law of 14 February 1987, No.41)[10][11] and maintains strong ties with both the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and the University of Pisa creating the Pisa University System.[4][5][6][7][8][9]
Sant'Anna replaced Antonio Pacinotti in 1987, when the School gained its current headquarters. The present-day site is acquired from a very ancient religious educational establishment. The Sant'Anna Church and Convent were established in 1406, while the church was finished in 1426, by the Order of the Benedictine Nuns. In 1785 was instituted the Conservatorio di Sant'Anna by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany - Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor, as a consequence of abolition of the religious orders due to Leopold's reforms the convent was suppressed in 1786 and continued to exist as a Conservatorio di Sant'Anna, an educational institution later under the tutelage of the Ministry of Education of the Kingdom of Italy and the Italian Republic. In 1987 the Benedictine Nuns dedicated the Sant'Anna Church and Convent to the Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari e Perfezionamento (previously the famous Collegio Medico-Giuridico of Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa),[3] provided that the School caries the name of Sant'Anna.[4][5][6][7][8][9]
Nowadays, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and the University of Pisa create the Pisa University System.

The mission of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies is to pave innovative pathways in education and research, responding to the modernization and innovation of society itself. This mission is pursued through the valorization of the autonomy and flexibility that characterize the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies and that derive from its status as an autonomous university by special statute, operating in the field of applied and social sciences.
The Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies has adopted three principles that constitute the foundation of its mission. Excellence in education, research and in every other activity, ensured by rigorous selection criteria for entering students; by attracting teachers and researchers of high scientific stature; by the elevated quality of facilities and services, thanks to the professionalism of the technical and administrative personnel.
Interdisciplinarity as a cultural and methodological premise for addressing the complex problems of today’s scientific and social realities.
Internationalization, understood as a propensity to cultivate relationships with other institutions at the international level; as an awareness of the problems of education and of cultural growth faced by young people from emerging countries.
Potential under graduates undergo a rigorous public examination, and only the very best are creamed off to combine their Pisa University studies with the extra options available at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, thus these students are called Honors College Students. Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna is also integrated with the Scuola Normale Superiore and Honors College Students are free to attend courses provided by departments other than their own, as well as those provided by the Scuola Normale Superiore.[8]
As of 2007[update], 42 freshmen are admitted per year. The School offers all of its services free of charge; students also receive a small monthly income. While attending the Pisa University courses, the Honors College Students (allievi) live in the school's college. Students have to achieve a high average grade in university exams and attend internal courses (including 2 foreign language classes) taught by professors and researchers working at the School, both as an integration and as an extension to the regular academic schedule.[8]
Sant'Anna Alumni Association, is headed by former Prime Minister of Italy Giuliano Amato.
The School also runs graduate courses, master and doctoral programmes, provided by its research laboratories and joint ventures with foreign universities, leading enterprises and international organizations.

Also, it has the highly reputed Master within the Erasmus Mundus programme - MAsters on Photonic NETworks Engineering (MAPNET)), a collaboration between Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, Berlin Institute of Technology, Aston University and Osaka University and some of the best companies and research centers in the world as associated members: Ericsson Research - Sweden, Deutsche Telekom - Germany, Mistubishi Electric Corporation - Japan, Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd - Japan, National Institute of Information and Communications Technologies - Japan.[31]
The School offers a variable number of additional specialized post-graduate and continuing education programs (around 40 in the academic year 2002–2003), organized in response to specific requests from industry and the private sector in collaboration with Italian and foreign universities and with other public and private organizations.
Unlike all other curricula provided by the schools, master courses require payment of fees (with the possible exception of courses deriving from special international partnerships).
The Doctoral Programmes (Italian: Corsi di Perfezionamento)[32][33] at Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies grant Diploma di Perfezionamento, a degree fully equivalent to a Ph.D. and are recognized International Doctoral Programmes involving various forms of collaboration and joint ventures with foreign universities.[33]
The Diploma di Perfezionamento[33] is a recognized as national and international title by the (MIUR) Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (Italy) Decree[32] equivalent to a Doctorate, Dottorato di Ricerca i.e. Research Doctorate or Doctor Philosophiae i.e. Ph.D (Article 3 of the Law of 14 February 1987, No.41 states 'The Diploma di Perfezionamento awarded for courses of study lasting at least three years is equivalent to a PhD.' )[33] which is historically famous and characteristic for the Superior Graduate Schools in Italy (Italian: Scuola Superiore Universitaria), also called "Schools of Excellence" i.e. "Scuole di Eccellenza".[34] [35]
The Doctoral Programs are 3rd cycle degrees as predicted by the Bologna Process containing structured courses and supervised research. Periods of visiting fellowship in other foreign and Italian institutions are financially supported by Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies and the Italian Government.

Doctoral Programme in Management focuses on innovation processes and the international competitiveness of firms, institutions, regional and national systems, and to the management of innovative services, such as environmental, insurance, health, technological and industrial policy services. It is ran by the Institute of Management at Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies which has the MAIN - Management & Innovation Laboratory and the MeS Lab - Management and Health Laboratory.
Also, the Institute of Management runs the international business school in Volterra : The SIAF International School for Advanced Education, which is the result of a partnership between Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, the Foundation of Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra and the regional government of Tuscany.
The International Doctoral Programme in Economics is jointly offered by Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and by University of Strasbourg .In addition to the teaching activities, Ph.D. students are part of a rich research environment, within the Laboratory of Economics and Management (LEM) at the Sant'Anna School, and the Bureau d'Economie Théorique et Appliquée (BETA), where Ph.D. students are encouraged to take part in various ongoing research projects. Also, it is part of a European network - involving the University of Sussex, Aalborg, Manchester, Paris XIII, Oslo and several others, supporting inter-European exchanges of research students and faculty, within the European Network of Excellence DIME.
The Doctoral Programme in Politics, human rights and sustainability is reputed by being under patronage of United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC). It draws experience from the Schools research centers in politics: CDG Laboratory - International Research Laboratory on Conflict, Development and Global Politics, ITPCM - International Training Programme for Conflict Management and the Iran Electoral Archive.
The Doctoral Programme in Individual Person and Legal Protections is an interdisciplinary connotation on the subject of the protection of the individual in modern society. It encompasses the LIDER - International and Comparative Law Research Laboratory, STALS -Sant’Anna Legal Studies and the Research Centre on Social, Juridical and Human Rights Sciences.
The Doctoral Programme in Innovative strategies in biomedical research consists in the System Physiology, Experimental and Clinical and the Physiological Genomics and Molecular Medicine. It has very well respected laboratories at Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche i.e. CNR.
The Doctoral Programme in Innovative Technologies of Info. & Com. Eng. and Robotics involves advanced research in four major areas of the Graduate School of Engineering : Bio-Robotics, Embedded Systems, Perceptual Robotics, Telecommunications. The research is conducted in very advanced laboratories in ccoperation with well respected international industrial companies at Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche i.e. CNR, Polo Sant'Anna Valdera at the Piaggio factory labaratories, labaratories in Genova and Livorno.
The Doctoral Programme in Agrobiosciences carries of advanced research in the fields of Genomics and Crop Science and Agriculture, Environment and Landscape. It has laboratories in cooperation with University of Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and is under patronage of the Rome based international Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The Doctoral Programme in Agrobiosciences carries of advanced research in the fields of Genomics and Crop Science and Agriculture, Environment and Landscape. It has laboratories at Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche i.e. CNR and also collaborates with University of Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and is under patronage of the Rome based international Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The Sant'Anna also maintains a number of research laboratories, some of which are located at the CNR, in the Pisa neighbourhood and Pontedera.

There are also worldwide important international corporations and industrial partners that are closely linked to Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, such as: the nearby Piaggio where there are special Sant'Anna Laboratories at the Polo Sant'Anna Valdera (PSAV)[44][45] which in essence contributes to the industrial process, Finmeccanica, Fiat (Centro Ricerche Fiat), Telecom Italia, Marconi Communications, Ericsson Research, Deutsche Telekom, Mistubishi Electric Corporation, Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd, etc.
Sant'Anna also undertakes many international projects which are tied to the European Commission, the Government of Italy and its ministries, as well as regional projects of the Region of Tuscany and the Province of Pisa.
In the framework of the bilateral cooperation between Italy and China i.e. the Office of Chinese Language Council International (HanBan), Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna hosts the third Italian Istituto Confucio i.e. Confucius Institute.
