Sankeshwar is a town located in Hukkeri taluka, Belagavi District, in Karnataka. It is located on National Highway 4. It is 50 km north of Belagavi. It is located on the bank of Hiranyakeshi river.

As of 2001[update] India census,[2] Sankeshwar had a population of 32,511. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Sankeshwar has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 59%. 13% of the population is under 6 years of age. Kannada is the major language spoken here. Along with Kannada speaking people, one finds people who speak Marathi, Hindi, Telugu,Malayalam, Tamil, and others. People also speak English for commercial purpose.
Sankeshwar is situated on the northern bank of Hiranyakeshi river. This river is the life-blood of the city and is the source of water supply for domestic and irrigation purpose.( by Prof B B Patil)
Sankeshwar is well connected to Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra by National Highway No.4 by Road. Nearby railway stations are Belagavi (50 km), Ghataprabha (32 km) and Kolhapur (64 km). Belagavi has airport which has flights from Bengaluru and Mumbai. Sankeshwar has a bus depot and a bus station located on old Puna-Bangalore road. Everyday around 1000 Buses depart from Sankeshwar and more than 4000 arrive and pass by Sankeshwar.
