Sandringham is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Sandringham, on the Sandringham railway line. It is in Metlink Zone 2, is classed as a Premium Station and is the terminus for the Sandringham line. The trip to Flinders Street takes about 28 minutes.

Facilities

Sandringham is located on Station Street and at the southern end of the Abbott Street level crossing, with station access from the former.

The station consists of one side platform, with a large red brick building in the centre of the station, housing an enclosed waiting area, ticket facilities and toilets. A large Metcard ticket vending machine is located inside the waiting area, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A small coin-only Metcard ticket vending is also located in the waiting area.

A signal box is located at the Flinders Street end of the station, whilst a stabling yard is directly opposite to the station.

History

Sandringham station opened on 2 September 1887.[1] It was upgraded to a Premium Station on 30 October 1995.[2]

A tram service, operated by the Victorian Railways (on 4ft 8 1/2 in. track), ran from Sandringham Railway Station to Black Rock. It opened in 1919 and closed in 1956.

On 9 March 2011 a Siemens train overshot one of the sidings and crashed into a Bendigo Bank branch.[3]
