In the year 1606, the first group of Recollect missionaries reached the Philippine shores. Mindful of the mission they had to accomplish, they spread themselves nearly all over the Philippine archipelago, and succeeded in establishing missions in regions not yet covered by other religious congregations.
In 1616, the Recollect fathers build a church and convent in Cavite City. They remained in the province, spreading the light of the Gospel and promoting Christian civilization until the outbreak of World War II.
In 1966, determined to continue the work which they had begun in Cavite, the Recollect fathers founded San Sebastian Junior College, an exclusive high school for boys and a co-educational tertiar level institution in Commerce, Liberal Arts and two-year course in Secretarial Science. The school had only a single building, part of which was the father’s residence, with only 281 students from the high school and the college departments.
Over the years, the student population increased, particularly in the college department. This development prompted the enhancement of the college’s pool of educators, as well as the expansion and upgrading of its facilities and curricular offerings. From its humble beginnings, SSC-R de Cavite continues to evolve into one of the leading educational institutions in the province of Cavite.
To date, SSC-R, run by the Augustinian Recollect Fathers, has been serving the youth of the city and the nearby towns of the province for over 40 years.
In 1986, the high school department was made co-educational to accommodate young girls seeking admission to the school.
In 2001, the school was able to purchase a reclaimed area near Samonte Park in the Cañacao District to the site of the future campus for the Grade School and High School levels.
In August 2004, the Recoletos 4th Centennial Gymnasium was inaugurated and in school year 2006-2007, the High School Department moved to the new campus while a Pre-School and a Lower Basic Education Department was opened to the public.
The main campus houses the college department of the institution. For more information on the main campus, please refer to the aforementioned history.

San Sebastian College – Recoletos de Cavite participates in sporting events such as:
The school's basketball team was formerly known as SSC-R Hawks but is now changed to Baycats. The word Baycats (which is actually a Bornean cat) as the team mascot was derived from the nature of Cavite City, a city surrounded by Three Bays.
True to the motto of the Recollect Order, "Love for Learning," the religious prime movers believe that education must minister to the needs of the minds, the body and the soul of man. Thus, when the OAR Provincial Chapter convened in Manila in 1940, one of the provisions stated, "It is unanimous aspiration of the Fathers gathered in this Chapter that Schools of primary and secondary education and college be founded as soon as possible.
The RECOLETOS now operate a vast network of schools all over the Philippines, fully committed to the training of the Filipino youth for God and country.
As part of Recollect schools' tradition, selected high school students participate an annual event known as the Students' Congress of Recollect Schools (SCOReS). Hosting of the event rotates among five selected OAR schools, CST-R, SSC-R de Cavite, SSC-R de Manila, UNO-R Bacolod, USJ-R Cebu. Such event is held to be able to develop bonds and establish linkages among the students of the different Recollect schools in the country.
