The SM42 was the first heavy Polish diesel locomotive.
The technical documentation for this locomotive was produced in 1961 at the Poznań Research Centre for Rail Vehicles, and the production was given over to the Chrzanów Locomotive Factory (Fablok). The prototype was ready in 1964 and initially was tested in Warsaw. In 1967 and later, these locomotives were supplied to Legnica, Piotrków, Oleśnica, Wrocław, Szczakowa, Tarnowskie Góry and Gdańsk.
In 1972, a new version (6D/M) was developed especially for Moroccan railways (ONCFM). 37 were delivered as class DG 200.
Some locomotives were moved into passenger service and reclassified PKP class SP42.
