Organizational structure

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is a group of three organizations. It has a collective purpose of promoting the well-being of Canadians and immigrants and of encouraging their integration into the community.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. (the society) was founded in 1973 and incorporated in 1974 as a non-profit charitable organization. Started as a settlement service organization, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. has developed into a multi-service provider delivering settlement, counselling, group, employment, business and economic development services, as well as engaging in advocacy for positive social change. Initially as an organization to assist new Canadians of Chinese origin to overcome their language and cultural barriers, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. has become an agency serving clients of different cultural backgrounds (Chinese, Korean, South Asian, Middle Eastern, African, European and First Nations).

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Multi-Level Care Society was incorporated in 1995 to deliver a continuum of care to seniors through the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Simon K.Y. Lee Seniors Care Home, Chieng’s Adult Day Centre, assisted living residences (Harmony House and Austin Harris Residence) and other health-related programs.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation was incorporated in 2001 to manage fundraising activities and funds to provide financial support to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. MLC Society.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. MLC Society are governed by a policy Board composed of twenty volunteer directors elected by and from its membership. Guided by polices set by the board and led by the CEO, over 100 programs were offered by about 400 professional staff and more than 2,000 active volunteers.

In 2007-08, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. delivered about 170,000 client-services and served more than 180,000 participants in events and activities. It also provided care service to 103 residents in the seniors care home, 83 residents in two assisted living residences and 120 clients in adult day centre, and delivered 32,868 meals-on-wheels in the same year. For effective service delivery and clients’ accessibility, it provides services in over 20 locations in the Lower Mainland, one in Fort St. John and 2 overseas offices in Taipei and Seoul.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. has a combined budget of $36 million, approximately 80% of which comes from grants of three levels of government. The remaining funds are raised from the community through donations, fundraising activities, corporate sponsorships, membership dues and cost recovery programs. Annually, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation, under the leadership of its committed board members, holds four major fundraising events – the Gala Dinner, Raffle ticket sales, Walk with the Dragon and Charity Golf Tournament – to raise substantial funds to support non-funded or underfunded programs.

Significant efforts were taken in 2007 to strengthen the long-term financial stability of services. The Legacy Program was launched to facilitate continuing donors’ legacy by the creation of named endowment funds. Canada Social Enterprises Inc. – a wholly owned subsidiary of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. – was formed to deliver programs of good social value to generate revenue. In 2008, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. assumed full ownership of Sustainable Employment Network Inc. (SENI) – a social enterprise delivering self employment services to people with disabilities.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. contributes extensively to government consultation on policy and service issues, participate in sectoral committee work, advocate for positive policy changes, and coordinate community support in emergencies. Over the years, it has earned widespread public recognition for its services and contributions.

Since 2004, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Multi-Level Care Society have been accredited by Council on Accreditation (COA) and the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation (CCHSA) respectively for its accomplishment of excellent quality in organization and service delivery.

The current Chairman is Peter Kwok. Chief executive officer Lilian To died suddenly of a heart attack on July 2, 2005. Tung Chan became CEO on November 1, 2006.
