Settlement and population numbers

The 2001 UK Census recorded 15,160 Russian-born residents.[3] Estimates published by the Office for National Statistics suggest that the resident Russian-born population of the UK was 32,000 in 2009.[4] The supposed population surge led to jocular nicknames for London such as "Londongrad" and "Moscow-on-the-Thames".[5]

In London and the South East there are a number of Russian schools aimed at transmitting Russian language and culture to the children of Russian immigrant parents.[6]

The Russian ambassador to the United Kingdom Yuri Fedotov has stated that local Russians fall victim to xenophobia and that the police often refuses to investigate those incidents.[7]

The total number of people of Russian descent is close to 300,000 [8]
