Runavík is a comparatively urbanised village in the Faroe Islands. It lies on the south half of the isle of Eysturoy. The municipality of the same name incorporates 14 settlements[1] including Æðuvík, Rituvík, Saltangará, Glyvrar, Lambi, Lambareiði, Søldarfjørður, Skipanes, Skáli, Skálafjørður, Funningsfjørður, Funningur, Elduvík and Oyndarfjørður which together form a long, narrow residential connurbation over 10 kilometre long following the east bank Skálafjørður (a fjord). As of 2010 the municipality had a total population of 3,797 inhabitants,[1] a rise of over 100 in five years. This makes it the third largest town in the Faroe Islands.

Founded in 1916, Runavík has an important port, originally used predominantly by fishing boats but now also a key supply base for the North Sea oil industry as well as a trans-shipment port for freight to and from Europe.[2] The harbor underwent development in the late 1990s.[3]
A massive infrastructure project has been mooted to build an 11km-long sub-sea tunnel between Runavík and Tórshavn by 2016 thereby significantly reducing travel times to the capital.[4][5] If built the tunnel would cost around 1 billion Danish Krone.
The local football team is NSÍ Runavík.
