Much of what is now Roxburgh Park was formerly used as agricultural land and Roxburgh Park was only developed by the Urban Land Corporation in 1992 (not unlike the new towns in green wedges of Britain). The commercial hub of the suburb is located on Somerton Road (highways 35 and 58).
As of 2005 development has progressed, with the construction of more child care centres, a retirement village, an Islamic centre, as well as improvement of roads. The Roxburgh Park railway station opened on 30 September 2007.
Most of Roxburgh Park's fame came with widely screened TV commercials throughout the mid-1990s, presenting Roxburgh Park's avowed virtues as a planned community with a balance of residential, industrial and reserves (part of the Shanklands Reserve is in the south of Roxburgh Park), as well as community services and access to transport. The slogan for the campaign was Roxburgh Park - where dreams come true...
The Broadmeadows Valley Trail makes its way through the suburb, in a north south direction.
Two large shopping centres are located within the suburb. On Somerton Road is Roxburgh Park Shopping Centre, on Pascoe Vale Road near Hungry Jacks and the Roxburgh Park Hotel is the Roxburgh Plaza and Homemaker Centre. The Roxburgh Homestead Shopping Centre lies close to the Roxburgh Homestead Primary School.
A number of popular fast food chain outlets are also positioned within the suburb including KFC, McDonalds, Red Rooster, Pizza Hut, Charcoal Chicken and Hungry Jacks.
The three supermarkets located in the suburb's shopping centres include Safeway and Foodworks, both located in the Roxburgh Park centre, and a local IGA located in the Homestead centre.
Two medical clinics are available to support the community. Somerton Road Medical Centre located within the main Roxburgh Park centre and the Roxburgh Park Superclinic located at the Homestead centre.
Roxburgh Park Football Club, an Australian Rules football team, competes in the Essendon District Football League.[2]
