Rotterdam Hofplein, located in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, is a former railway station as well as a former RandstadRail station. It was the terminus of the former Hofpleinlijn (Hofplein line) with services between Rotterdam and Scheveningen, later between Rotterdam and The Hague central station. The station is located very near to the railway line between Rotterdam Centraal and Rotterdam Blaak stations, but has never had a direct connection to it.

History

On 1 October 1908, Rotterdam Hofplein railway station was opened for operation by the Zuid-Hollandsche Electrische Spoorweg-Maatschappij trains towards Scheveningen. The station building was destroyed during the Rotterdam Blitz bombings on 14 May 1940, and a new building was opened in 1956. This building was again demolished for the construction of a railway tunnel between Rotterdam Centraal, Blaak, and Zuid stations in the early 1990s. When Hofplein station was closed in 2006, it featured one island platform, of which only one side was still in operation.

RandstadRail operation

The railway station was closed on 3 June 2006 for a conversion of the entire Hofpleinlijn to the RandstadRail system. On 10 September 2006 the station re-opened as a temporary RandstadRail station for trains of line E. Since the new metro tunnel between Melanchthonweg station and Rotterdam Centraal station opened on 17 August 2010, line E trains do not call at Hofplein anymore, which resulted in the station finally closing down.
