Rotherham Town F.C.
Rotherham Town Football Club was the name of two English football clubs from Rotherham, Yorkshire[1]. The first briefly played in the Football League, while the second became part of another Football League club, Rotherham United, who are still members of the League today. The club played at Clifton Lane.
Rotherham Town (1878–1896)
The original club was founded in 1878 as Lunar Rovers, becoming Rotherham in 1882, and eventually Rotherham Town[1]. In 1889 the club became a founder member of the Midland League. They were champions in 1892 and 1893, and were subsequently elected to the Second Division of the Football League in 1893.
However, the club were not very successful, lasting only three seasons in the League, finishing in 14th, 12th and 15th place (out of 16) before failing to even apply for re-election. The original club then folded.[1]
The man widely regarded as the first ever black professional footballer, Arthur Wharton played for the club from 1889-1894. Liverpool Football Club played their first ever fixture against Rotherham Town on September 1, 1892 in a friendly fixture.
Rotherham Town (1899–1925)
In 1899, Rotherham Casuals and Rotherham Grammar School combined to form a new Rotherham. On becoming a limited company in 1904 a new name of Rotherham Athletic was adopted, that became Rotherham Town in 1905.[1]
In 1903 the new club joined the Midland League, where they remained until 1925[1], when they merged with their Third Division North neighbours Rotherham County to form Rotherham United.
