Roosevelt Middle School (San Francisco, California)

Roosevelt Middle School is a public middle school located in the Richmond District of San Francisco, California, USA.[1] Roosevelt is named after President Theodore Roosevelt. It currently educates in grades 6-8. Roosevelt was built on a large city block. The school consists of about 30 classrooms including two bungalows, two gyms, a library, and an auditorium.

History

The school was established on September 3, 1877 as Lobos Avenue Primary School, and in 1888 became Richmond Primary School. Subsequently the name changed to Roosevelt School. The current school building opened on November 9, 1930 as Roosevelt Junior High School. In 1978 the grade levels were changed from 7-9 to 6-8 and the name was changed to Roosevelt Middle School.[2]

Academics

San Francisco schools, though highly performing in 2008, have an issue with black students falling behind their white peers. Roosevelt Middle was cited as one of three schools where black students were doing well.[3] In 2008, Roosevelt Middle School was the only school nominated for a California Distinguished Middle School Award, and in 2009, they got the approval from the SFUSD. The logo is printed in the lobby.

Newspaper

Roosevelt Middle's newspaper, Highlights, won the American Scholastic Press Association's first place award for best middle-school paper in 1996, 1997, 2002 and 2003.[1]

Events

The students were complimented for their honesty and initiative, in November 1997, when they collected about $4,600 in notes that were dumped in front of the school after a bungled bank robbery.[4][5]

Sports

The Roosevelt Boys Basketball Team of 2008-2009 made it to the playoffs for the first time in three years. They were eliminated in the first round by Aptos, losing by forty-one points. Their captains were Francis Law, Andy Mo, and Charlie Yip [6] They made it to playoffs again in the 2010-2011 school year, but lost to A.P Gianini. They also have a baseball team too,their season for the 2011-2012 season was 4-4 which was the one of the best records for the team for the past five years.But the team has a championship drought for 22 years.
