The name Romanby suggests that the village dates from Roman times, but in fact it is thought to derive from the Viking name Hromund.

A self contained village, it boasts two shops, post office, dentist, hairdressers and a pub

The Redmire branch line passes over a bridge just on the outskirts of Romanby Village on its way up to Wensleydale from Northallerton. No scheduled passenger trains have run on this stretch of line since the early 1950s, but a bus service operates from Northallerton railway station to Leeming Bar railway station where the Wensleydale Railway currently terminates.
