Biography

Roman R. Kachanov was born into the family of Roman Abelevich Kachanov, a famous Russian animator.[1] He began his career aged fifteen, as Kir Bulychev's literary secretary. In 1984, he entered the scriptwriting faculty of the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow and was first published that year in the VGIK's newspaper. While studying at the VGIK, Kachanov wrote scripts for his academic studies.

In 1989, at the age of 22, he graduated from VGIK. The following year, he began shooting the film Don't ask Me about the Thing], which he completed in 1991. However, due to the country's economic difficulties, the film was not released. The premiere took place in 1994 in the Central House of Cinematographers, in Moscow. In January 1992, Kachanov began shooting the film Freak. Between 1993 and 1997, he produced commercials. In 1998, he directed the low-budget picture Maximilian. In the same year he married the actress Anna Buklovskaya.[2]

In 2000, he completed production of the film Demobbed, which received wide recognition amongst both critics and the public and triggered a flurry of imitators. This was the first Russian film to repeatedly pay off in theaters. It was premiered at the opening of the first multiplex cinema in Russia, the multiplex Karo in Moscow. In 2001, Kachanov completed the production of his film Down House.

In 2003, Roman Kachanov and Anna Buklovskaya were divorced. Kachanow married the actress Angelina Chernova.[3] They have two children, Gara and Dean.
