Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Modena-Nonantola

The archdiocese of Modena-Nonantola is a Roman Catholic ecclesiastical territory in Italy. It existed as the diocese of Modena in central Italy from the 3rd century CE. In 1820 it incorporated the territory of Nonantola Abbey; it was named an archdiocese in 1855 and took its current name in 1986.[1]

Its suffragans are the diocese of Carpi, diocese of Fidenza, diocese of Parma, diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio, and diocese of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla.

The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Modena-Nonantola (according to the Annuario Pontificale, or Pontifical Yearbook, of 2004) had a total population of 462,000, and a Catholic population of 455,000 (98.5% Catholic). There were 260 total priests (184 diocesan and 76 religious, with 1,750 Catholics per priest), there were 42 permanent deacons, 85 male religious, and 538 female religious. There were 246 parishes. The archdiocese is 2,089 square miles (5,410 km2) in area.

On Wednesday, January 27, 2009, the Holy Father, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, appointed His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop Antonio Lanfranchi, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cesena-Sarsina, Italy, as Metropolitan Archbishop-Abbot of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Modena-Nonantola, Italy. The Archbishop-elect, age 63, was born in Grondone di Ferriere, Italy on May 17, 1946. He was ordained a priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio, Italy, on November 4, 1971 at age 25, 38 years ago. He was appointed Bishop of Cesena-Sarsina six years ago by the late Blessed Pope John Paul II on December 3, 2003. He was consecrated as Bishop of Cesena-Sarsina on January 11, 2004. The Principal Consecrator was His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop Luciano Monari, Bishop of Piacenza-Bobbio. The Principal Co-Consecrators were His Excellency, The Most Reverend Archbishop Paolo Romeo, then-Apostolic Nuncio to Italy and San Marino and now Archbishop of Palermo, and His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop Lino Esterino Garavaglia, O.F.M. Cap. The Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Modena is His Excellency, The Most Reverend Archbishop Benito Cocchi, age 75, who retired upon having reached the age limit; he had been Archbishop since June 1996 and had served before that as Bishop of Parma and Auxiliary Bishop to the Archbishop of Bologna. Archbishop Cocchi had presided over the Funeral Mass of the late tenor Luciano Pavarotti when it was held in 2007 in Modena Cathedral.
