Robert Hiester Montgomery was an influential accountant and educator. He was president of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants for two two-year terms, starting in 1912 and again in 1935. He is author of numerous books on auditing and taxation including Auditing Theory and Practice, a bestseller originally published in 1912 which has since gone through at least 11 editions. He received the AICPA's Gold Medal Award in 1949. In 1950, he was inducted into the Accounting Hall of Fame, in the first year of that award.^[1] Despite his success, he lacked formal education, having not even completed high school.
