Background

Nakai was born on October 22, 1986(1986-10-22) in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, Japan.[3][4][5][6] She started training in judo at the age of three.[6] She was ranked #5 in judo in all of Japan in middle school and #3 in senior high school.[6]

Mixed martial arts career

Nakai debuted on October 1, 2006 (2006-10-01), defeating Asuka Ito by TKO after breaking Ito's nose at Pancrase 2006 Blow Tour.[3][6][7][8]

On May 19, 2007 (2007-05-19), Nakai defeated Kazue Matake by unanimous decision at Smackgirl: The Queen Said The USA Is Strongest.[9]

Nakai continued her winning streak at Smackgirl: Queens' Hottest Summer, held on September 6, 2007 (2007-09-06), where she submitted Australian Muay Thai expert Asha Ingeneri with an armbar.[10]

In the Smackgirl: World ReMix 2008 Second Round, Nakai defeated Kanako Takeshita by split decision on April 25, 2008 (2008-04-25).[11]

During Pancrase 2008 Shining Tour, Nakai earned her second TKO victory by defeating Tomomi Sunaba with punches on December 7, 2008 (2008-12-07).[12][13]

After fourteen months without professional MMA matches, Nakai debuted with promotion Valkyrie on February 11, 2010 (2010-02-11), defeating Mizuho Sato by submission due to a Kimura at Valkyrie 04.[14]

At Valkyrie 06, Nakai defeated former Smackgirl Open Weight Champion Megumi Yabushita by unanimous decision on June 19, 2010 (2010-06-19).[15][16]

Remaining undefeated, Nakai defeated Mayumi Aoki by armbar submission at Valkyrie 07 on September 26, 2010 (2010-09-26) during the semi-finals of the tournament to determine Valkyrie's first Open Weight Champion.[17][18]

Nakai faced Mizuho Sato a second time at Valkyrie 08 on November 28, 2010 (2010-11-28) in the finals of the Valkyrie Open Weight Tournament. She defeated Sato by TKO after the doctor stopped the fight before the start of the second round due to an injury to Sato's left eye caused by Nakai's striking. Nakai was awarded the victory and became Valkyrie's first open weight champion.[19][20][21]

Nakai faced Mika Harigai at World Victory Road Presents: Soul of Fight on December 30, 2010 (2010-12-30).[22] She defeated Harigai by submission due to a keylock in the first round.[23][24]

On September 4, 2011 (2011-09-04), Nakai faced Danielle West at Pancrase Impressive Tour 9.[25] The fight ended in a split draw after three rounds.[26][27]

Grappling career

Prior to making her MMA debut, as a freelance, Nakai had four grappling matches on July 23, 2006 (2006-07-23) at Smackgirl Grappling Queen Tournament 2006 in the middleweight tournament. She defeated Harumi by armbar and ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship 2007 finalist Felicia Oh by points (10-4). She lost against Takayo Hashi by points (4-17) and Akiko Ninomiya by referee decision after drawing in points (0-0, advantages 2-2), and finished in fourth place.[28][29]
