Rashad Farhad oghlu Sadygov (Azerbaijani: Rəşad Fərhad oğlu Sadıqov; born June 16, 1982, in Baku) is an Azerbaijani footballer and the national team captain. He plays for the Azerbaijani club side FK Qarabağ.

In 2006, as a result of missing the registration deadline for the Azerbaijani football club side PFC Neftchi, Sadygov played basketball for local club BK NTD.[1]

Early life

Sadygov began playing football during his school years at Vagif Pashayev-led Youth Football Sports School at age of 10.[2] He also spent time playing football for the clubs Sharur, the Air Force team, and Real Baku, all of which are based in Baku.[2]

Club career

In 2000, Sadygov signed his first professional contract with PFK Turan Tovuz and but played only 9 games. At that time, he also played for Azerbaijan Under-21 football team.

Neftchi Baku

2001–02

At the end of the 2000/01 season, the defender was transferred to PFC Neftchi.

2002–03

He played for Foolad F.C. in Iran's Premier Football League in 2002.

2003–05

After his comeback to Neftchi, Rashad won the national championship and cup and succeeded in passing the first qualification round of the Champions League with the black-and-whites. He played 8 games in European cups for Neftchi (2 in UEFA Cup qualifying in 01/02, 2 in UEFA Champions League qualifying 04/05, 4 in UCL qualifying 05/06).

2005–06

He traveled to Turkey to play for Kayserispor in 2005/06. He was loan back to Neftchi in January 2006.[3]

2006–07

He played once at the start of 2006/07 season, but planned to back with Neftchi, again. Sadygov failed to notice that Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan changed the deadline of transfer window, so he changed to play basketball to keep his fitness.[4]

Kocaelispor

On January 23, 2009, Sadygov joined the Turkish Super Lig club Kocaelispor on six months contract after he was kicked out from PFC Neftchi by the head coach Hans-Jürgen Gede in December 2008. Rashad made his debut for Kocaelispor in their four nil victory over Hacettepe on January 25, 2009.

FK Qarabağ

In July, 2009, Sadygov briefly returned to FK Qarabağ to help them in UEFA Europa League and scored a magnificent goal against Rosenborg BK.[5] He also scored against FC Honka after delivering the powerful free kick.[6] As a result, he signed one year contract with Karabakh, after club's impressive performance in UEFA Europa League.[7][8]

Eskişehirspor

In August 2010, he signed 2 year contract with Turkish Super Lig outfit Eskişehirspor.[10] However, following string of injuries, he failed to get regular place in Eskişehirspor's defence, which caused him to seek new club.[11][12]

FK Qarabağ

After being heavily linked with a move back to FK Qarabağ, Sadygov joined Qarabağ on 11 February 2011.[13][14]

International

Sadygov made his Azerbaijan debut on 6 October 2001, against Sweden during 2002 FIFA World Cup qualification (UEFA). Sadygov was Azerbaijan's vice-captain under Carlos Alberto Torres, deputising in the absence of regular captain Gurban Gurbanov, but following the retirement of Gurban Gurbanov from football, Sadygov was named as full time captain in March 2004.[15][16]

Personal life

Sadygov was one of the favorite players among Kocaelispor supporters and nicknamed "Terminator" by local media.[18] He also featured as one of the official faces for Azerbaijan Premier League promotion campaign in 2010.[19]
