According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), all of it land.
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 701 people, 277 households, and 191 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,164.9 people per square mile (451.1/km²). There were 290 housing units at an average density of 481.9 per square mile (186.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 89.73% White, 6.42% Native American, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 1.28% from other races, and 2.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.28% of the population.
There were 277 households out of which 36.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were non-families. 26.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the town the population was spread out with 30.1% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. Four television stations serve Ranchester: KTVQ (CBS) and KULR (NBC) from Billings, KSWY (NBC) from Casper, and PBS station K26BE is a local repeater for KCWC-TV in Lander.
