Radio:Active
Radio:ACTIVE is the fourth studio album by English pop punk boyband McFly, which also is the band's first under their new, self created label, Super Records after leaving Island Records.[5] The first single from the album is "One for the Radio".[6] "Lies", one of the tracks from the deluxe edition of Radio:Active, is the second single from the album.[7] The third single from the album is "Do Ya", which was released on 23 November 2008.[8] On 24 June 2008, McFly announced that they would be giving away Radio:Active free with copies of The Mail on Sunday on 20 July 2008, with a deluxe edition of the album available in shops on 22 September 2008, following that a release of a second single on 15 September 2008.[9] The deluxe edition includes four extra songs, a bonus DVD and a 32-page booklet.[10] On 8 December 2008 a single disc version of the album was released in the UK. This version had everything but the DVD and lyrics in the booklet, although some new pictures were featured in the booklet. This version of the album has replaced the Deluxe Edition version in stores. Singles from the album were released in a recyclable digipak form, instead of the normal plastic cd case. In Japan the album has three different covers,[11] all of which contain different bonus tracks and different DVD features.[12] The first single in Brazil from the album is "Falling in Love" (promo single), and in UK "Falling in Love" was promo single from Radio:Active DVD. "Lies" and "One for the Radio" received a platinum sales status certification for sales of over 100,000 in the Brazil. "Radio:Active" received a Silver sales status certification for sales of over 90,000 in UK[13]
Album information
McFly gave away 2.4 million copies of Radio:Active with The Mail On Sunday, which represented a 300,000 copy increase from the paper's average circulation.[14] Singer Tom Fletcher revealed about the new strategy: "We get to put it into almost three million homes, which is an incredible opportunity for us. Hopefully the three million people will all enjoy the music and they'll decide to see us when we go on tour." Mail on Sunday managing director Stephen Miron said both "the band and the paper were very happy with the sale".[15] Since its release Radio:Active has sold over 500,000 copies worldwide.
- "One For the Radio", originally called "Radio", was decided to be the first single from Radio:ACTIVE Charting in the UK at 2. It was Released on the 9th July 2008 on a 3CD Format. Vocalist and guitarist Tom Fletcher explained to Click Music: "We definitely don't want it to be seen as a negative song at all. It's more positive, you know, uniting the people together that do like us, and saying if you don't, well, we don't care as we're happy and proud of who we are.
- "Lies" was released on the 6th September the same year and charted 4th in the UK, It features an acoustic cover of an Abba hit 'The Winner takes It All' later to be performed at the Olympic Torch Event.
- "Everybody Knows": Tom said in a interview "'Everybody Knows' is about growing up being in a band. When most kids were leaving school and going to college, we were leaving home and recording our debut album, so we went through those tough, teenage years together."
- "Do Ya" is the 3rd single from Radio:ACTIVE a Double A Side to Rod Stewart's 'Stay with Me' for Comic Relief. It peaked at 18 in the UK Charts. McFly explained 'Do Ya' We wanted to write a song that everyone could sing along to. It's us doing what we do best - big, ballsy pop."
- "Falling In Love" was released to download on the 10th May 2009, It wasn't brought out as a Single CD. It was brought to download to promote McFly's 'Radio:ACTIVE Live at Wembley' DVD. Tom revealed what the track was about "This song came from one of (lead guitarist) Danny (Jones') ideas. It's about a missed opportunity. Someone has left your life and you can't help but think that if she had stayed then you could have fallen in love. It's never too late, though".
- "POV (Point Of View)" has been known as the song what completes the album slow with a explosive anthemic chorus. McFly said about POV "This is about a girlfriend who's not happy no matter what I do. In the end, I realize she's making me feel so bad that I wouldn't wish for her to feel the way I do"
- "Corrupted": Backing vocals Dougie features on this song briefly. Tom Fletcher explained this track as "This number is about a messed-up relationship, where neither partner is right for each other but both of them realize that it's the bad stuff they love. Is breaking up really what they want, when doing what they know is wrong feels so good?" Danny Jones used a high pitched kazoo in this song.
- "Smile": Tom Fletcher explained how this song came about "I was singing in my car one day and 'Smile' just started pouring out of me. I always make sure my mobile has a voice recorder feature for such occasions!" He explained the track also. "This song deals with those times when you're feeling down and you need something to smile about to get through the day."This song deals with those times when you're feeling down and you need something to smile about to get through the day."This song deals with those times when you're feeling down and you need something to smile about to get through the day".
- "The End" is a slow track but picks up throughout wrote with writing group 'The Matrix' has been held back for 3 albums before McFly decided it'd to go on R:A.
- "Going Through The Motions (GTTM)": Tom said they had a title and tried to find the lyrics for the title "There was talk of us doing some sort of musical and I thought if we were going to play a band in a film again (we played ourselves in the Lindsay Lohan film Just My Luck, a couple of years ago) then we should be called 'The Motions.' If that ever happens, this is the track we would play. They then wrote the track from Radio:ACTIVE 'Going Through The Motions'.
- "Down Goes Another One": According to McFly on their Radio:ACTIVE DVD, this song is about the boy in the relationship with the girl from McFly's 2005 track "She Falls Asleep.
- "Only the Strong Survive", an upbeat song which was considered to make the numbers on the album and branded the 'Weakest album track' by Digital Spy.
- "The Last Song": "Imagine being able to sing one final song before you die…you'd give it everything: slow, quiet moments, huge rock parts and lots of emotion. That's what we wanted to achieve with this one." Tom Fletcher said.
