RTB1 is the first and oldest free-to-air government terrestrial television channel in Brunei. RTB1 began broadcasting on 1 March 1975. Typically, RTB1 broadcasts for 18 hours daily from 6:00 am to 12:00 midnight, however, times may vary due to certain special events and festivals. During non-operating hours, the channel will direct broadcast to RTB4 for 6 hours daily from 12:00 am to 6:00 am.

RTB1 mainly shows documentaries, educational programmes and news.

History

Radio

Radio Brunei was launched (without television service) on 2 May 1957 with a Hari Raya Aidilfitri titah from His Majesty Al-Marhum DYMM Paduka Seri Baginda Maulana Al-Sultan Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien III. The typical broadcast on the radio channel lasts for 45 minutes each evening from 8:00 pm to 8:45 pm. The range of the single 1.2Kw transmitter was only five miles around the capital Brunei and surrounding areas.

On 1 March 1975, Radio Brunei (the parent company) was renamed Radio Televisyen Brunei when its first television channel was launched.

As of 1974, RTB has 171 staff and three transmitting sites giving almost 100% coverage of the country and beyond.

Television

Radio Televisyen Brunei launched the pilot television set service on 1 February 1975 as Channel 5 after successful test transmissiona. RTB1 launched official regular television services opened by KDYMM Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah on 1 March 1975 with full coverage in the Brunei-Muara District. One year later, on 1 March 1976, two high power Medium Wave stations in the Brunei-Muara District commenced transmission, expanding the coverage of radio and television services to almost 100% of the country.

Startup

RTB1 starts up at 6:00 am. The national anthem was firstly played, followed by the recitation of the Koran holy words. The first program of the day follows thereafter.

Closedown

RTB1 closes down at 12:00 am. They first played tomorrow's program schedule, the recitation of the Koran holy words follows, and finally the national anthem. They handover to RTB4 which broadcasts from 12:00 mn-6:00 am.
