The Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL) was an Australian rules football competition for clubs from South East Queensland.

Up until 2010, the QAFL was the premier semi-professional[1] competition in Queensland, with salary cap rules and regulations in place.

It was previously known as the Queensland Football League (QFL), Queensland Australian National Football League (QANFL), Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL) and AFL Queensland State League (AFLQSL).

In November 2010 the league's Premier Division merged with AFL Canberra to form the North East Australian Football League, featuring all its previous teams as well as the Gold Coast Football Club reserve team in the Northern Conference of the league.[2] The lower division clubs will continue to play as a local competition.

Salary Cap

The QAFL is classed as a semi-professional competition as it has a salary cap for each division. For 2008, the top level QAFL Division 1 had a salary cap upper limit of $120,000.[3]

League revenue is primarily derived from sponsors, supporter memberships and grants.

Expansion

It was originally announced that the Gold Coast Football Club would field a side in the QAFL as preparation for a 2011 AFL debut,[4] however it was later announced that an underage team would be fielded in the TAC Cup instead. The AFL has since announced that the QAFL will nonetheless be slightly remodeled from the 2009 season onwards. Towards the end of the 2008 season, it was announced that a Northern Territory representative side will compete in the QAFL Division One from 2009, with the team to be based out of Darwin or Alice Springs.[5]

Completing the new look competition will be two teams promoted from the current QAFL Division Two, the Aspley Hornets and the Western Magpies. Aspley will move up to the highest division of the competition in order to replace Zillmere as the northern representative in the competition after Zillmere were unable to obtain a license to compete due to financial difficulties.[6] The Magpies are re-entering Division One after being demoted to the second division after the completion of the 2004 season, and proving themselves strong and capable of competing in the QAFL Division One with three consecutive senior grand final appearances for two premierships, four consecutive reserves grand finals for three premierships and solid off-field development.[7]
