Péry

Péry is a municipality in the Jura bernois administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is located in the French-speaking Bernese Jura (Jura Bernois).

History

The first mention of Pery is in 884 where it is call villam Bedericam. In 1148 it was known as Peril.[3]

Geography

Péry has an area of 15.7 km2 (6.1 sq mi). Of this area, 22.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while 67.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 9.8% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.6%) is non-productive (rivers or glaciers).[4]

It lies on the eastern end of the Saint-Imier valley and includes the villages of Rondchâtel and La Reuchenette.

Demographics

Péry has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 1,357.[1] As of 2007, 11.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -0.2%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks French (79.6%), with German being second most common (15.4%) and Italian being third ( 2.2%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 32.6% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (25.6%), the FDP (24.6%) and the Green Party (8.9%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 22.8% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 61% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 16.2%. In Péry about 69.6% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Péry has an unemployment rate of 2.57%. As of 2005, there were 19 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 7 businesses involved in this sector. 182 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 14 businesses in this sector. 138 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 27 businesses in this sector.[4]
