Puthanathani ("Puttanattani") is a fast-growing small inland town located in Athavanad, Malappuram district, Kerala, South India. The town lies on the National Highway 17 (India), between Kottakkal and Valanchery. Roads to Vailathur and hence Tirur and Thirunavaya also can be seen there. A good amount of men from Puthanathani and around are now working overseas mostly in the Persian Gulf countries, making the economy of the previously poor region shiny.
The region was under the feudal lords the Azhvanchery Thamprakkal in ancient times. The Zamorin of Calicut controlled the area.
