The Prout School is a Catholic, coeducational, college-preparatory, a member of the NEASC and an International Baccalaureate high school in Wakefield, Rhode Island. It is the only International Baccalaureate high school in Rhode Island. It services all of New England, but more specifically Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.

History

Located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, The Prout School was founded in 1966 by the Sisters of the Cross and Passion of Manchester, England and named after Mother Mary Joseph Prout, the order's founder. The school was originally an all female institution called Prout Memorial High School. The campus was built on a 212-acre (0.86 km2) property adjacent to nearby Wakefield. In 1981, the school became a diocesan high school, and in 1986 it became a co-educational institution and was renamed the Prout School. In 1992, following the 25th anniversary of the school, Prout became the third United States school to become a member of the International Baccalaureate Organization.

Prout has a very large active arts program including theatre, music, visual arts and dance. The theatre department puts on a play in the fall and a musical in the spring. The dance, music and visual arts departments have a joint program every December and June. A list of theatre productions include:

Recent Improvements

The school has had continuing updates performed on it. Recently, a large addition was constructed on the side of the building. The addition incorporated mostly foreign language, math and science classrooms. Also, a small indoor gym/workout room and foreign language lab were added. Aside from the addition, a new music room, new art room, and new administration rooms were added. A hallway was relocated; a classroom was built where an old kitchen was. Tile flooring was also installed in the basement (replacing carpet).

The Prout School offers many diverse (non-athletic) extra curricular activities that encompass the school's mission to not only serve the students but to serve the community as well.

College Counseling

The Prout School is known for its exceptional college counseling program, which has helped students to be admitted into some of the country's most rigorous and selective colleges/universities. Students undergo an intensive college selection program coupled with extensive workshops and meetings to help them decide and apply to the schools of their choice. The school is also known for placing a strong emphasis on academic college preparedness.
