The event was established in 1867, and it was initially held at Chantilly. It was named in honour of the Princes of Condé, the former owners of the Château de Chantilly, a mansion which overlooks the racecourse. Upon the death of Louis Henri de Condé (1756–1830), the last of the Condé line, the estate was bequeathed to Henri d'Orléans, the Duc d'Aumale. The Prix de Condé was originally contested over 2,000 metres. It was not run in 1870 because of the Franco-Prussian War.
The race was transferred to its present venue, Longchamp, in 1907. The regular version was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1914 to 1918. There was a substitute event at Chantilly in 1917.
The Prix de Condé was cancelled only once during World War II, in 1939. It was temporarily switched to Auteuil in 1940, Maisons-Laffitte in 1943 and Le Tremblay in 1944. Its distance was shortened to 1,800 metres at Auteuil and Maisons-Laffitte.
When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the Prix de Condé was classed at Group 3 level. The usual distance of the race, which had been 2,000 metres since its launch, was cut to 1,800 metres in 1985.
