History

The event was established in 1929, and it was originally contested over 2,400 metres. It was named in memory of Emmanuel d'Harcourt (1844–1928), a former president of one of the sport's governing bodies at that time, the Société d'Encouragement. He was also a successful racehorse owner and breeder, and he owned the Haras de Saint-Georges and Haras de Marly-la-Ville stud farms.

The Prix d'Harcourt was temporarily switched to alternative venues during World War II. It was held at Auteuil in 1940 (in the autumn), and at Maisons-Laffitte in 1943 and 1944. The second running at the latter venue was over 2,000 metres, and for a period thereafter its distance was frequently modified. It was changed to 2,150 metres in 1946, 2,100 metres in 1953, and 2,000 metres in 1958. It was subsequently extended to 2,100 metres in 1961, and to 2,200 metres in 1969.

The race was formerly scheduled to be run a few weeks after the Prix Ganay, but the dates were interchanged in 1971. The Prix d'Harcourt has been run over 2,000 metres since then, and it now serves as a trial for the other race. The last horse to win both events in the same year was Planteur in 2011.
