Biography

He is third in the line of succession to the Norwegian Throne, after his father and his older sister. As a descendant of Edward VII of the United Kingdom, he is also in the line of succession to the throne of each of the sixteen Commonwealth Realms; where Sverre Magnus ranks ahead of his sister, since those Realms still follow the custom of male-preference primogeniture.

The prince's name was communicated in a council of state by his grandfather King Harald V on 5 December 2005 and that he will be styled and titled as His Highness the Prince Sverre Magnus. His closest family call him Magnus.

Both his names have a royal history; Sverre of Norway reigned in the 12th century, and Magnus has been the name of seven Norwegian monarchs. Crown Prince Haakon's middle name is also Magnus.

Prince Sverre Magnus was christened on 4 March 2006 by Bishop Ole Christian Kvarme at the chapel inside The Royal Palace in Oslo. He had seven godparents: his grandmother Queen Sonja, Princess Máxima of the Netherlands, Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, Princess Rosario of Bulgaria, Mette-Marit's brother Espen Høiby, and the crown couple's friends Bjørn Steinsland and Marianne Gjellestad. His older sister, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, had six godparents, including a king and three Heirs apparent.[1]

Besides the godparents, several royal guests and politicians attended the christening, including Denmark's Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Parliament President Thorbjørn Jagland.

Title and style

Prince Sverre Magnus does not use the style Royal Highness like his sister, and is not a member of the Royal House of Norway.[2] Furthermore, according to the Norwegian Royal Family website, Prince Sverre Magnus does not use any title other than Prins in Norwegian,[3] whereas the title His Highness is used in English.[4]
