Pohlern is a municipality in the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

Pohlern is first mentioned in 1389 as in der Polleren.[3]

Geography

Pohlern has an area of 9.9 km2 (3.8 sq mi). Of this area, 37.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 42.5% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 2.1% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (18.3%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[4]

It lies on the northern side of the Stockhorn mountains in the lower end of the Stockental valley. Like most of the canton of Bern, it is German-speaking.

Demographics

Pohlern has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 267.[1] As of 2007, 4.1% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 8%. All of the population (as of 2000) speaks German.

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 68.3% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (7.6%), the CVP (6.6%) and the Green Party (6.4%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 20.8% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 62.8% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 16.4%. In Pohlern about 65.1% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Pohlern has an unemployment rate of 1.28%. As of 2005, there were 36 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 15 businesses involved in this sector. 11 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 4 businesses in this sector. 19 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 6 businesses in this sector.[4] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
