Po Leung Kuk No.1 W.H. Cheung College
Po Leung Kuk No.1 W.H. Cheung College (also known as Po 1, Chinese: 保良局第一張永慶中學) is a secondary school which uses English as the medium of instruction. It is located at 173 Po Kong Village Road, Tsz Wan Shan, Wong Tai Sin, Hong Kong. It is the first school established by Po Leung Kuk in 1971, monitored by Po Leung Kuk and subsidized by the government. At present, the principal is Mr. Chow Chor Shing. The motto of the school is 'Respect, Love, Diligence, Sincerity'.
History
- In the 1970s, the Hong Kong Government encouraged secondary learning. Therefore, Po Leung Kuk started a plan to establish the first secondary school.
- In 1967, Hong Kong Government allotted 50,000 sq. meter of land to Po Leung Kuk to help with her work. She made use of the land to establish her first secondary school, named as Po Leung Kuk (PLK) Committee Fellowship Association (CFA) No.1 Secondary School. The establishment of the school drove Po Leung Kuk to establish more schools to provide education services. Later, the school was provided with classrooms from PLKuk CFA No.4 Primary School (Now Po Leung Kuk Ho Sau Nan Primary School). In September, the school started 12 classes of Forms 1-3.
- In 1971, PLK CFA No.1 Secondary School was formally established. After a year, the construction of the school building was finished.
- On 21 February 1973, Hong Kong's 25th Governor Sir Murray MacLehose arrived to the school site to attend the opening ceremony of the school.
- In 1988, all classrooms and special rooms are facilitated with air conditioners.
- In 1994, the school receive a fund from Cheung Wing Hing Foundation. The fund was used to further improve the environment of the school.
- To commemorate Mr Cheung Wing Hing's contribution to the school, it was then renamed as 'Po Leung Kuk No.1 W.H. Cheung College'.[1]
- In 2010, it was proposed that one more new wing is to be built in the campus. In 2011, the construction was finished and the building was named "Ngan Po Ling Annex" to commemorate Ms Ngan Po Ling's generous financial help for the construction to be possible.

The Student Association (S.A.) holds a lot of activities each year, these include the Christmas Variety Show on last day before Christmas Holiday. S.A. may also hold some fund-raising activities for charities.

Students are sorted into four houses by the time they first registered a place in school. The four houses are Red House, Yellow House, Green House and Blue House.

Po Leung Kuk No.1 W.H. Cheung College is a famous school in Wong Tai Sin District, also a locally famous school.
Results in Public Examinations
The school has always put one of its foci on students' academic results. As a result, the academic results of students are generally excellent. Recently, in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), the distinction rate has been at 50% or above, passing rate kept at 97%. In the past 5 years, 97.3% of Form 6 or 7 graduates can be admitted into a university shortly after graduation.
- In 2000, Ho Nga-Yan got 10 distinctions in HKCEE, being the first student who get 10 distinctions in Wong Tai Sin. Liu Wai-Wai got 9 distinctions and 1 credit. Also, Lau Ka-Yee got 5 distinctions in her Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE).[2]
- In 2001, a Science student got 10 distinctions in HKCEE.
- In 2006, a Science student got 9 distinctions and 1 credit in HKCEE. Also, Ko Ching-fung got 4 distinctions in HKALE.[3]
- In 2007, a Science student got 9 distinctions in HKCEE. Also, 7 more students got 6 distinctions or more in HKCEE. The lowest points in HKCEE in Science class is 25, Arts class is 22.
- In HKCEE 2007, overall passing rate: 98.9%; English Language passing rate: 100%; Chinese Language passing rate: 97.4%; Mathematics passing rate: 100%.
- In HKALE 2007, overall passing rate: 97.7%; Use of English passing rate: 100%; Chinese Language and Culture: 100%.
- In 2008, a Science student got 8 distinctions in HKCEE, with the distinction rate of 57%.
- In HKALE 2008, overall passing rate: 100%. Also, 100% of Form 6 or 7 graduates can be admitted into a university shortly after graduation.
- In the last HKCEE 2010, overall distinction rate was 62.2%. Also, 10 students got at least 6 distinctions or more in HKCEE.
- In 2008, two students got the champion and first-runner up of Individual Gold in Hong Kong Problem-Solving Olympics.
- In 2009, two students got Individual Gold in Hong Kong and Macau Mathematics Olympics Open.
- In 2011, the Ice Hockey team was the champion in the Hong Kong School Ice Hockey League.
- In 2011, a student got Honourable Mention in the 12th Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Others
- Po Leung Kuk Celine Ho Yam Tong School and Po Leung Kuk No.1 W.H. Cheung College share similar uniforms. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between. Therefore, Po Leung Kuk No.1 W.H. Cheung College designed a special house badge for all of the students, which they must wear at school. The badge consists of the words "PLK No.1 College" in red and is contoured by the colour of the bearer's house.
- In 2007, 4 F.2 students were robbed by 4 gangs in Tsz Wan Shan Estates when they were on their way back school after lunch. They were all hurt and their belongings were robbed. 3 of them was sent to the hospital for a check-up.[5]
- PLK No.1 W.H. Cheung College is very concerned about students' academic results. They weigh half for the criteria of enrollment, against the other half of conduct, extra-curricular activities, etc. Some students complained about a large amount of homework and tests. In 2003, a student had committed suicide, believed to have suffered enough from the stressful examinations.[6]
Graduates
Po Leung Kuk No.1 W.H. Cheung College is established for nearly 40 year. Though her graduates aren't as outstanding as graduates from conventional famous schools in general, their effects on society should not be omitted.
