Pluit

Pluit is an administrative village (kelurahan) of Penjaringan, North Jakarta that is predominantly residential such as De Paradiso Apartment. Most of the inhabitants are of Chinese origin. They run many Chinese restaurants in nearby Muara Karang. Pluit is developing into a busy commercial center that features a unique Pluit Junction with its many fine dining restaurants, celebrity fitness and XXI premium cinema, Mega Mall (which is now known as Pluit Village) and Emporium Pluit Mall are the main shopping malls that have Carrefour, Timezone, Cinema XXI, Sogo (Emporium Pluit), and Matahari New Generation Department Store (Pluit Village) as their anchor tenant. Several schools in Pluit are BTB International School, Tarakanita, IPEKA, BPK Penabur, Permai, Diakonia and STM 12.

Toponomy

The name of Pluit does not have connection with fluit (whistle in Dutch). This word fluit is fluitschip, meaning the kind of long slender ship.

Around 1660 on the east coast estuary Kali Angke, there was a fluitschip, named Het Whitte Paert, which was not unseaworthy. Used as a stronghold of defense to help Castle Vijfhoek on the edge of Kali Grogol, east of the Kali Angke, in order to overcome the sporadic attacks Banten forces. The fortress then known as De Fluit, who later became Pluit until now. 80% residence are chinese

Pluit pumps

Pluit pumps were in use continously not operated during heavy rain only, due to Pluit is located below sea level. Jakarta administration plans to build a new reservoir addition of the current reservoir with value a Rp280 billion ($30.8 million), starting in 2012.[1]
