Its name originates either from the platan trees or from Platamonas (-onos) and means wide rock, within the sea, originally referred to the citadel of Ηράκλεια (Heraclea).[1] Its most famous landmark is the Hellenistic-byzantine, Castle of Platamon. Platamon is regarded as one of the most significant tourist destinations in Pieria. The town is home to numerous restaurants, cafeterias, hotels and camping resorts while it is 54 km from the city of Larisa and 38 from the city of Katerini.
