Pimelodella is the largest genus in the family. However, it is in need of taxonomic revision.[1]

This genus has a cis- and trans-Andean distribution from Panama to Paraguay and southern Brazil.[1] This genus includes two species of troglobitic catfishes, P. kronei and P. spelaea.[1]
