Peter Tippett

Peter Tippett is a vice president of research and technology for Verizon Business Security Solutions, which acquired Cybertrust in 2007 and he was the president of the International Computer Security Association presently is the Chief Scientist of ICSA Labs.[1]

Early life

Born in 1953 and raised in Dearborn, Michigan, Dr. Tippett is a trained scientist with both a Ph.D. and MD from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and studied at the Rockefeller University under Drs. R.B. Merrifield and S. Moore.

Technological achievements

He is credited as the developer of one of the first anti-virus software, "Vaccine", which was later sold and renamed Norton AntiVirus.[2]

Tippett pioneered and commercialized a string of now-common technologies including what is now called the "Recovery Disk," processor image signatures, using hash-tables for trusted file execution and anomaly detection, aspects of mail merge and "un-do". He ran a bulletin board system for CP/M software before the first IBM PC was created and was president of the Cleveland Osborne Group (for the computers of the Osborne Computer Corporation) in the early 1980s.

In addition, he was one of the world's leading experts on the "I LOVE YOU" virus that broke in May 2000 and provided key information to the Department of Justice about David Smith, the writer of the Melissa virus.

Dr. Tippett advised the Joint Chiefs of Staff on cyber warfare during Desert Storm. Prior to joining Cybertrust, Dr. Tippett was director of security and enterprise products at the Peter Norton Group of Symantec Corporation. He was president and founder of Certus International Corporation, a publisher and developer of leading PC anti-virus, security and enterprise management software, before its merger with Symantec in 1992. Dr. Tippett has served on the Computer Ethics Institute Board of Directors and is chairman of the Alliance for Internet Security.

Personal life

Tippett is a life-long commercial pilot and has held the highest amateur and commercial radio engineer certifications.
