Peter Monteverdi (7 June 1934 in Binningen, Switzerland – 4 July 1998 in his Binningen apartment directly above his own car-assembly workshop[1]) was a Swiss automaker and creator of the automobile brand Monteverdi.

At the beginning of his career, Monteverdi was a car salesman. In 1957 he acquired the Swiss franchise for Ferrari, subsequently becoming Swiss importer for other international prestige brands including Rolls-Royce and Bentley. [2] In 1952, he started producing his own cars under his name. In 1961, he built the first Swiss Formula one car, which bore the name MBM (Monteverdi Basel Motoren). Monteverdi bought the Onyx F1 team after its original backer ran into financial difficulties, but Monteverdi's attempt to run the team on a shoestring and in an interventionist style led to its rapid demise.
