Paronychium

Paronychium or the "lateral nail fold" is the term for the soft tissue surrounding the border of the fingernail or toenail. it keeps anything from getting underneath the nail, causing an infection [1]

Clinical significance

This tissue can become infected around an ingrown toenail or finger nail. The resulting infection is termed paronychia.
