Peggy Fortnum

Peggy Fortnum, born Margaret Emily Noel Fortnum (born 23 December 1919)[1] is an English illustrator. She was born in Harrow, Middlesex. She worked as an art teacher, painter, and textile designer before becoming a full-time book illustrator. She has illustrated nearly sixty-five books to date. Fortnum resides in Essex, England. Her most well-known illustrations are of Michael Bond's character, Paddington Bear.[2]

Although her distinctive pen and ink drawings of Paddington were originally done in black and white, some of her work has subsequently been coloured by other artists, including her own niece, Caroline Nuttal-Smith.
