Pederneiras is a municipality in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. The population in 2010 according to 2010 Census from IBGE is 41,497 people and the total area is 729 km². The elevation is 475 m.
The region of Pederneiras was inhabited by indians (natives) until the 40's from XIX century. During the Minas and São Paulo Revolution that was happened between 1841 and 1842 a lot of residents ran away with the purpose to escape from the military draft and to discover new areas. Therefore around the years of 1841/1842 three frontiersmen arrived by Tietê river: Manoel dos Santos Simões with his two sons, Manuel Leonel dos Santos and João Leonel dos Santos. In 1848, they were in Saint Anna Parish (current Botucatu municipality) and registered their land as "Pederneiras Farm". Another lands were purchased near by the Pederneiras Farm and in 1877, other people that were already living there, they donated land for the construction of the Chapel of Saint Sebastian of Joy. In 1889, it was elevated for the Township category, had its name changed into Township of St. Sebastian of Joy.
