Patty Shwartz (born 1961) is a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey and currently a nominee for a seat on United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
Shwartz was born in Paterson, New Jersey. Shwartz earned her B.A. degree from Rutgers College in 1983 and her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1986, where she was a member of the Law Review. After graduating from law school, she worked as an associate at Pepper, Hamilton & Scheetz.
Shwartz clerked for New Jersey federal judge Harold Ackerman (1987–1989) and worked for the New Jersey U.S. Attorney’s Office from 1989 until 2003. During this time she held the following positions: Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division (1995 to 1999), Chief of the Criminal Division (1999–2001 and 2002–2003) and Executive Assistant United States Attorney (2001–2002). In 2003 she became a magistrate judge.[1] Since 2009 Shwartz teaches as an adjunct professor of law at Fordham University School of Law.[2]
Shwartz was recommended for a judgeship on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit by Sen. Frank Lautenberg. On October 5, 2011 she was nominated by President Barack Obama to a judgeship on the on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.[3] Her nomination is pending before the U.S. Senate.
