Parophrys is a genus of fish in the Pleuronectidae family. It consists of only one species, the English sole.
The English sole was first given the name Parophrys vetulus by Charles Frédéric Girard in 1854; the word parophrys is derived from the Greek para, meaning "near", and ophrys, meaning "eyebrow".[1]
