Kunal Chopra was once a career-oriented and successful lawyer; but fate had something else in store for him. He fell foul of his employer, D. K. Thakral, a powerful and unscrupulous lawyer. Kunal not only lost his job but was also separated from his girlfriend, Richa, who was Thakral's daughter. With his professional career in tatters, Kunal tried his hand at other ventures; but they all failed. Dejected, he began to feel like a failure amidst his family and society.
Kunal is a middle class Punjabi man who lives in a small flat with his parents, two brothers named Gaurav and Anand, a sister called Raveena, Gaurav's wife Seema and two nieces (Seema and Gaurav's daughters). They live very peacefully and are a happy family, but constantly face shortage of money. Gaurav is employed in his father-in-law's business firm. Anand is studying law. As Kunal and their father were lawyers, Anand also wants to be one. Raveena, the youngest sibling, is studying in a college.
Anand passed his law examinations and became a lawyer. The whole family was happy and started rejoicing. Anand got employed at D. K. Thakral's law firm, where Kunal had earlier worked. Siddhi Malik, an idealistic middle-class girl, was Anand's colleague. They fell in love and got engaged to be married. However, their happiness was short-lived. Anand died in a bomb blast on the day he was to marry Siddhi. He had heard the news on the radio about a bomb being placed in a nearby place and wanted to save his fiancee. Unfortunately, the bomb struck him. Siddhi was waiting for Anand at their wedding venue. He tried to call her, but collapsed and died. Siddhi heard this news from a policeman who called her up. Without informing anyone, she ran to the site of the blast. She saw Anand's body and fainted. Siddhi and Anand were taken to the same hospital.
Later, the news of Anand's death reached his family. Veena, his mother, went into shock and had to be hospitalized. Her condition was critical. Kunal's father suggested that Siddhi and Kunal should get married to each other. He felt that it would bring some happiness to both their families and might help Veena to recover. This proposal was accepted by Siddhi's family, because they were afraid that she might not find another suitable match in the circumstances. Thus, Kunal and Siddhi got married.
After the marriage, Kunal makes efforts to revive his career and support his family. He finds a new job as a lawyer with Siddhi's help. Now Kunal and Siddhi are slowly growing close to each other. But Richa (who still loves Kunal) interferes and tries to separate them . One fine day, in court, Kunal and Siddhi find themselves pitted against each other in a case; Siddhi with, and Kunal against, Thakral's son. Kunal wins the case with Siddhi's help, after she gives him some valuable evidence, once she realizes her client is guilty.
