Originally called Turravari Palem, by the 18th Century the British renamed it to Pangili, doing so in part because it is "cutting edge" to Nellore District, and in part due to difficulty pronouncing the original name. The village is located 3 miles from Rapur, at the foot of Veligonda, on the west and North side of the State highway that leads to Cuddapah District and passes through Rapur Kanumalu. Pangili is surrounded by Hills on three sides: On the West: Veligonda; on the East: Kakulakonda, the location of the Tomb of Masum Sahib (a Mahammadan saint); on the north North: Dadikonda. On the South side, the Yeti Vagu flows from Veligonda to the Bay of Bengal, but only during the rainy season.
Pangili is a Panchayat having 3 villages -- Pangili Diguva, Madduru palli, and Kalujugunta -- in its jurisdiction.
Pangili is primarily an agrarian society. Its primary agricultural products are paddy, ragi, sajja, korra, aarika, horsegrams, and ground-nuts. Uncultivated items ("Hill products") -- such as honey, firewood, and various roots and fruits -- are also gathered. The irrigation sources are tanks, traditional wells, and bore wells. No water canals pass through Pangili.
Pangili locally provides Upper Primary School education through the 7th grade.
There is no Primary Health Unit in Pangili; residents must travel to Rapur or Nellore for medical care.
The predominant religious affiliation of Pangili is Hindu. While Islamic practitioners are common in India, there are no openly-practicing muslims in the village. A minority of residents practice the Christian faith.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ was first preached in August 1979 by members of Christian Prayer House(Brethern) of Nellore,on invitation of Bro. Duggineti China Venkaiah. a Christian church in Nellore.
Pangili's residents live in a general state of poverty, and adhere to the Hindu Caste system.
