Panangattiri-The word derived from "PANNAGADRI",which means "VAIKUNDAM-where Lord Mahavishnu is"...The main attraction is Lord Prasanna Venkatachalapathy Temple which is the most rarest in Kerala.
Communities peculiar to Panangattiri village are Ezhava, Nair, Pathukudi, Viswakarma, Iyer,Kulala, Gounder&Kanakkar.
Panangattiri is a valley village of 'Western Ghats' near 'Palagappandy falls and 'Seetharkundu' with picturesque greenery typical to any village in Kerala. The sceneries of lush green paddy fields and the view of the ponds (Ponds are the backbone for irrigation of paddy fields in the summer)with full of vibrant life, is really picture perfect! It is quite nostalgic for those who are away from this beautiful village to pamper the thoughts with these vivid pictures well captured in their minds!
The view of Rajamala between Parambikkulam and Nelliyampathy hills reminds the viewers of 'Manas Kailash' and hence, it is called 'Manas Kailash' of South..!
Another uniqueness of this village is that, at the centre of this small habitat, there is a make shift temple, which has Iravan as its deity. 'Iravan' was the son of Arjuna and Uloopi of the epic 'Mahabharatha' and across India, there are only very few temples with 'Iravan' as deity. The 'Lord Iravan' is called 'Koothanda' in the colloquial dialect and the temporary temple structure as 'Koothanda Mannam'. There is an annual festival celebrated in the month of February, called as 'Koothanda Vela' and during that time, an effigy of 'Lord Iravan' is made with hay & bamboo, with its head made out of clay and face painted in green. Symbolizing the death of 'Iravan' on the last day of the 'Kurukshetra' war, the effigy's head is broken and its body burnt with traditional festivities and fire works!
Panangattiri is in 'Elevanchery' Gram Panchayat in Palakkad District in the state of Kerala, which had recently produced a (former) Central Minister in Dr. Shashi Tharoor. Dr. Tharoor's Grand Mother and maternal uncles still live in Elevanchery.
