Palomar Medical Center (PMC) is a hospital located in Escondido, California. PMC is operated by the Palomar Pomerado Health (PPH) District, which also operates Pomerado Hospital in nearby Poway. The hospital is the only designated trauma center in northern San Diego County.[1]
PMC opened in 1950 as Palomar Memorial Hospital. A tower addition, McLeod Tower, was completed in 1974. The hospital was renamed to Palomar Medical Center in 1987.[2]
PPH has plans to move the acute-care hospital in Escondido from the present location (PMC) to a new 653 bed hospital facility (PMC West) to be constructed in the Escondido Research and Technology Center (ERTC). PMC West is slated to have decentralized nursing stations, healing gardens and green roofs. Cost increases have caused delays in construction.[3] The hospital is projected to open in 2012.[4]
