Ostermundigen

Ostermundigen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

The city is the birthplace of screen legend, Ursula Andress.

Geography

Ostermundigen has an area, as of 2009, of 5.94 square kilometers (2.29 sq mi). Of this area, 1.9 km2 (0.73 sq mi) or 32.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.52 km2 (0.59 sq mi) or 25.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 2.55 km2 (0.98 sq mi) or 42.9% is settled (buildings or roads) and 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.2% is unproductive land.[3]

Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 3.2% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 25.8% and transportation infrastructure made up 9.1%. Power and water infrastructure as well as other special developed areas made up 2.0% of the area while parks, green belts and sports fields made up 2.9%. Out of the forested land, 24.4% of the total land area is heavily forested and 1.2% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 25.1% is used for growing crops and 6.2% is pastures.[3]

Demographics

Ostermundigen has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 15,438.[1] As of 2007, 22.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -3.4%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (82.0%), with Italian being second most common ( 4.4%) and French being third ( 2.4%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 29.4% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (25.3%), the FDP (13.7%) and the Green Party (10%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 19.7% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 65.1% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 15.2%. In Ostermundigen about 69.1% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Ostermundigen has an unemployment rate of 2.55%. As of 2005, there were 39 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 13 businesses involved in this sector. 1668 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 114 businesses in this sector. 4605 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 370 businesses in this sector.[4]
