W.I.T.C.H. is an Italian fantasy/Magical girl comic series created by Elisabetta Gnone, Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa. It tells the story of five teenage girls who are chosen to be the new Guardians of Kandrakar,[1] protectors of the center of the universe from people and creatures who wish to cause harm to it. For this purpose, powers over the five elements have been given to them. The new guardians are Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia and Hay Lin, whose initials form the title acronym "W.I.T.C.H."; and are ironically not witches but fairies in guardian form.
Written books adapted from The Twelve Portals and Nerissa's Revenge comic arcs were the only American releases until 2005, when Disney released graphic novels containing two issues each, subsequently releasing volumes about every two months. At the beginning and end of every story is a pin-up or miniature poster.
Contents |
Beginning on April 2001, the W.I.T.C.H. comic book releases one issue per month and is generally written with each story arc lasting 12 issues, or one year. An exception to this format is the fifth story arc, which spanned 15 issues, the sixth story arc which spanned only 11 issues, the eighth with 13, and ninth which last 14 issues.
Five teenage girls — Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia, and Hay Lin — are chosen to be the new Guardians of Kandrakar; a group of magical beings who protects the universe and promotes peace and justice in the name of the Oracle and Kandrakar. For this obligation, the girls are each given an element to control; Will is the Guardian of Energy and the Keeper of the Heart of Kandrakar; Irma is the Guardian of Water; Taranee the Guardian of Fire, Cornelia the Guardian of Earth; and Hay Lin the Guardian of Air. The girls found it difficult to balance between their honorable duty and their ordinary lives in the city of Heatherfield on Earth. The first saga introduced a world called Metamoor, ruled by a tyrannical ruler named Prince Phobos. Years ago, Prince Phobos caused the disappearances of his parents and took over the capital city, Meridian. To prevent his spreading tyranny, the Oracle lowered a Veil over the planet, separating Metamoor from the rest of the worlds under Kandrakar’s protection. However, Twelve Portals had been opened between Meridian and Earth, creating a series of passageways for the desperate refugees and monsters of Meridian to infiltrate Earth. The Portals also weakens the Veil and in order to prevent this, generations of Guardians were sent to protect it from collapsing.
The first saga also introduced Elyon Brown, a childhood friend of Cornelia. The Guardians’ first mission was to close the Twelve Portals, but as they found out for themselves, Elyon had betrayed them. It is revealed that Elyon is Prince Phobos’s younger sister who had disappeared from Meridian more than a decade ago. After Prince Phobos’s right-hand man, Lord Cedric, revealed Elyon of her true alien heritage, she began to hate the Guardians and worked against them. The Guardians must now find a way to defeat Prince Phobos and bring Elyon back home. In Meridian, however, there is a rebellion taking placed and it is led by Caleb. They sought to overthrow Prince Phobos and put Elyon on the throne as she is the legitimate ruler. The Guardians later worked together with the rebels and Elyon realized her mistake for trusting her cruel brother. Prince Phobos had planned to absorb his sister’s powers for himself during her coronation, but with the Guardians’ help Elyon escaped and later battled against him for the crown. The final battle was successful, but not without some losses. Prince Phobos transformed Caleb back into a crystal flower, his most primitive form as a Whisperer. This devastated Cornelia greatly to the point where it will haunt her into the next series. As Elyon is crowned Queen and the Light of Meridian, the world of Metamoor is finally liberated. The Oracle lowered the Veil and both Prince Phobos and Cedric are imprisoned in the Tower of Mist.

The Guardians must face an old enemy of Kandrakar – Nerissa, the corrupted ex-Guardian and the previous Keeper of the Heart. When the Oracle realized how the immense power of the Heart was corrupting Nerissa, he took it away from her and gave it to Cassidy, the former Guardian of Water. Obsessed with her lost power and blinded by jealousy, Nerissa tricked Cassidy and killed her. As punishment, Nerissa was stripped of her magic and sentenced to sleep in Mount Thanos. When Cornelia accidentally absorbed all five elements into herself, the seal on Nerissa’s tomb broke, setting her free. When Caleb is kidnapped, the Guardians must face Nerissa along with her four Knights of Vengeance. While successful in their rescue mission, they lost Luba who sacrificed herself to save them. Hoping to steal the Heart, Nerissa later attacked the girls through their dreams in order to weaken them (but failed). She was later successful in stealing the Heart back by tricking Will into giving it to her. With the Heart now corrupted by Nerissa’s hatred, the former Guardian and her Knights of Vengeance attacked Kandrakar. Will later acquired the Star of Cassidy, a copy of the Heart from Cassidy’s ghost. With it Will and her friends faced Nerissa in Kandrakar. In the final battle, Nerissa was killed by the Guardians. Despite their victory, Cornelia is heart-broken when Caleb left her due to their complicated relationship.

Crisis after crisis threaten to break up the girls once and for all. Will's father, Thomas Vandom, returns into her life after a decade of absence, and his intentions are anything but loving and trustful. Later, Taranee went on strike because she felt that the Oracle is using them and how much he had left them in the dark in previous missions. A new character, Orube, joins the remaining Guardians on their new mission in defeating a new enemy. She and the Guardians didn't get along at first, and was forced to live in Heatherfield with W.I.T.C.H. in order for her to understand humans and working together with her new friends. The Guardians and Orube must stop Ari, the powerful lord of Arkhanta, from rising up and destroying the Oracle. Ari's son, Maqi, suffered from a type of disorder since birth and the Oracle had refused to help Ari. Angered and blinded by rage, Ari captured a banshee, named Yua, and tried to use her wish-granting power to oppose the Oracle and Kandrakar. The longer Yua was held prisoner and serving as Ari's slave, the more powerful Ari becomes, and soon,he would have enough power to overthrow the Oracle. Taranee later rejoined the group and together, they were able to defeat Ari and set Yua free, despite her many cruel tricks into getting them killed. Being freed, Yua kidnapped Maqi because she wanted Ari to suffer for holding her imprisoned for many years against her will. Ari and the Guardians followed her into the swamp where she and her banshee sisters live. However, Yua accidentally dropped Maqi from a high level, nearly killing him during the flight. Maqi was later saved and cured when the Guardians and Orube offered their gifts from Xin Jing to him. Despite their mission in Arkhanta to be over, the girls have a whole bunch of new problems on Earth that needs their attention. Interpol discovers the secret of the W.I.T.C.H. girls and wants to capture them and use their powers for their own mysterious intentions. As if that was not enough, the girls' Astral Drops decide to rebel after months of being taken advantage of by the Guardians and start causing numerous problems between their families, teachers, and boyfriends. To save whats left of their lives, the Guardians let their Astral Drops be free and live new lives thanks to the Oracle removing their memories.

The members of the Congregation are questioning the Oracle's recent actions, and he shocked everyone by putting himself under trial. The Guardians are called in to recall his deeds such as using them as his own fighters and keeping many secrets from them. Throughout the Oracle's trial, he was found guilty by Endarno and was banished back into his home world, Basilíade. Back home in Heatherfield, Will confronts Orube and Matt, while Principal Knickerbocker goes to drastic measures to raise the girls' grades at Sheffield. In Kandrakar, the Council has to elect either Endarno or Yan Lin for the position as the new Oracle. After Endarno has been chosen, he makes the life of the girls uneasy. Like Luba, Endarno claimed to the Congregation that they are too young and immature. He also convinced the Congregation that Elyon, the queen and the Light of Meridian, is dangerous and unfit to rule over Metamoor. Many times he tried to get the Guardians to arrest their old friend and bring him the Crown of Light. But W.I.T.C.H. managed to hide Elyon from Endarno by smuggling her back to Earth and had Orube protect her. Moreover, he is someone else than he appears to be...an old enemy coming back for revenge and a bigger thirst for power. Elyon saw that Endarno was actually her brother, Prince Phobos, when she tried to plea her case before the Council. She was locked away in the Tower of Mist, the prison of Kandrakar and there, her powers are slowly draining. Yan Lin discovered Phobos's intention on taking over the universe disguised as Endarno and tried to contact W.I.T.C.H. in getting help. The Guardians were able locate the old Oracle, now called Himerish upon the discovery of his old identity before leaving for Kandrakar, with the help of Orube. Together, they tried to free Elyon and put a stop to Cedric and Phobos before Endarno(Phobos) is instated as the Oracle. In the end, Himerish was able to locate the real Endarno and he, in turn, revealed to the Council that the Endarno that they knew was Phobos in his body. Elyon returned to power on her world, Cedric was back in the Tower of Mist, and Phobos, rather than being locked up in prison again, threw himself into the endless void of Kandrakar. During this saga, Will revealed to Matt that she's a Guardian and told him everything about her and W.I.T.C.H. Matt later used his cunning to help the girls get out of trouble with the help of Orube by establishing valid alibis for them while they were in Kandrakar.

The Five Elements themselves have something in store for the girls. Their powers are growing. Even the triumvirate in Kandrakar does not have full understanding about it. Because of this, each Guardian discovered a new magical ability, yet their elemental powers are going out of control. At the same time, Cedric is disposed of his magic power and gets a second chance from the Oracle. He returns to "Ye Olde Book Shop" to live a decent life, under supervision of the Guardians. Nevertheless, he searches for a useful resource to get back his powers in hopes of getting revenge on the Guardians. He finds his luck in the Book of Elements, written by Jonathan Ludmoore. Thanks to Mr. Collins, the girls get to know about the book too. About a hundred years before W.I.T.C.H., Jonathan Ludmoore was an alchemist originated from Meridian as well. Prince Phobos had sent him to Heatherfield in order to open the Twelve Portals. After completing his mission, Ludmoore remained in Heatherfield for he discovered that it was a place where all five elements meet. When he tried to experiment on them, Ludmoore accidentally released all five elemental stones throughout Heatherfield, and in turn, was trapped in his own book. As the book captures Matt inside itself, the girls must cooperate with Cedric to open it again for he was the only one among them who could speak and understand the language of Metamoor. The book gives them a riddle that tells about the five elemental stones that were scattered across the city. The Guardians must find and collect each of these elemental stone in order to release the locks on the book so that they can free Matt. Endarno warned the Guardians that in order to capture these stones, they must face the Elemental Guards that stand and protect them. One by one, the girls were able to locate and find the stones, and back in the bookstore, Cedric and Orube slowly fell in love. However, the Guardians, Cedric, and Orube were sucked into the world of the book when Will refuses to surrender the Heart of Kandrakar. Cedric was later killed by Ludmoore and dissolved into ink when he tried to protect Orube from Ludmoore's deadly gaze. The Guardians later found Matt and managed to defeat Ludmoore once and for all with Matt's help. At the end of this saga, Will's mom, Susan Vandom, married her history teacher, Dean Collins. And later, a magical portal in the shape of the Heart appeared in the basement of the "Ye Olde Book Shop" for the W.I.T.C.H. girls to use in the next saga.

When Hay Lin stayed over at the Lyndons' home, she meets Karl and Tecla Ibsen, an elderly couple who seem to have a connection with Eric's school. Karl tells Hay Lin about the Ragorlang, a monster which absorbs the thoughts, the voice and the sounds of its victims. Coincidentally, a few students at Eric's school are getting inactive as if they had lost their youthful strength. The same evening Hay Lin gets attacked by a Ragorlang and was saved just in time by the other Guardians. Soon they discover who's behind the new threat: Tecla Ibsen. She wanted to be young and beautiful again and so she uses her magical ability to conjure up and control the Ragorlangs and ordered them to steal the youthful strength of the students at Eric's school by absorbing their thoughts and voices. The Guardians managed to defeat her and her Ragorlang. Unfortunately, Tecla returns, but as a frail, older woman, who can't summon a fully grown Ragorlang. Tecla brainwashed a magical girl named Erin, making her believe that the Guardians are the Ragorlangs and that it was their fault that her brother, Kader, went missing. At first, Erin uses her magic to make the girls hate each other while posing as an exchange student. She held Irma hostage with her mind-controlling power but releases her when she found Kader with the Guardians' help. It appeared that Kader and Erin were a group of wanderers who wanders from world to world, seeking a home of their own. When they found one on Earth, they were attacked by Tecla and her Ragorlangs. The two siblings temporarily stayed in Heatherfield to further help the Guardians defeat Tecla. And at school there's a new strange optometrist, named Folkner. W.I.T.C.H. later found out that he's a Ragorlang hunter and wishes to hunt down Tecla Isben, whom later regain full power due to leaked magics from Kandrakar. Despite being able to use the Shadow Heart against the Guardians, she was defeated when the last of her Ragorlangs was absorbed into a box created by Folkner. Obsessed with the dark power, Folkner unleashed the powers and became a supreme Ragorlang himself, controlling many others. He was later killed by the Guardians and was sucked into his own Ragorlang box at the end of the saga, and Karl and Tecla were both accepted into the Congregation of Kandrakar after admitting their mistakes. (This probably is the last arc. in English because the arc. after this doesn't have an English release. So does arc. 8, 9 and onwards.)

A new evil from the depths of the earth forces the Oracle to seal off Kandrakar from all other worlds, including the Guardians. A magical thief stole their magic, relieving them of their powers and giving them a temporary "normal life". But later, the girls regain their powers in the most pure form, as well as new haircuts and costumes; their new powers. Matt turns out to be the thief to make room for their new powers. With Matt serving as their new trainer, one by one, each Guardian must find the roots to their powers in order to gain complete control over it so that they can defeat this new and dangerous evil that is threatening Kandrakar and save the universe from a terrible crisis. This new and powerful enemy is revealed to be Dark Mother who was once Meter, the beautiful Queen of Spring. But Meter grew hungry with power and turned into a monster called Dark Mother and attacked Kandrakar. She was defeated by the other Elemental Queens of Fire, Water, and Air, and they cast her off into a void. But Dark Mother found a place to take roots under the forest of Heatherfield. Upon discovering the root of her power, Will accidentally broke the bonds created by Kandrakar that served as Dark Mother's chains and prison, freeing the evil Queen when breaking free of her hypnosis - and discovering the root of her power as well. Bent on revenge, Dark Mother infiltrated Kandrakar and manipulated the weak minds of the Congregation with her dark tree, saved for Yan Lin. For a short period of time, the evil Queen had turned the once, beautiful kingdom of light into her kingdom of roots and her personal playground. The Guardians later followed Dark Mother and tried to defeat her with their new powers. However, the Queen picked them off like flies as they weren't united and were arrogant in their thoughts. Yan Lin helped them relocate their magical bond and love for each other, giving life to a spirit of themselves to defeat Dark Mother. The former Queen of Spring was later sealed in a stone tomb and the Oracle relinquished his place to Yan Lin, who foresaw the coming threat before hand. Even though Dark Mother is gone, the roots of her mind-poisoning tree took root deep within the Foundation of Kandrakar. The Guardians later destroyed and used their magical bracelets to tie down the anchors of said foundation. At the end of this saga, a preview into the next one shows that Yan Lin became the new Oracle and she gave the W.I.T.C.H. girls new and powerful pink tools; Will received bolas that give an overcharge of energy with each crackle, Irma a tambourine that can freeze anything, Taranee a powerful fire-ball/volleyball, Cornelia received a gymnastic ribbon that could change shape and grow plants, and Hay Lin got two folding fans that can cause huge gusts with a slight motion (which the girls learned of when they go to a beach for vacation). Over the course of the arc, Will's mom Susan is pregnant and gives birth to William just prior to Will finding the root of her powers. Will mentioned to Matt that she had decided to train her new baby brother William how to control his magic upon the recent discovery that he had them like his sister. Himerish, the former Oracle, left Kandrakar without saying good-bye.

The Guardians must find the magical children of Heatherfield and teach them to control their powers. To help them in this new mission, the new Oracle, Yan Lin gives them the key to the W.I.T.C.H Van, a magical on-the-road school that houses five magical laboratories tailored to each girl's personality and that are expressions of the powers of the Elements. There is a spell on the van to allow only those with the potential for magic can see the design "Teach 2b W.I.T.C.H." on the walls of the van. With the assistant from their caretaker and bus driver, Kandor of Kandrakar, W.I.T.C.H. was able to locate magical children from all over the city and offering to help teach them on how to control their powers. However, a new enemy known as Takeda seeks to destroy all magic, as he believes that it is responsible for his eldest daughter's illness. Mariko, Takeda's daughter, accidentally discovered a different and magical world called the Fast World. Yet, unfortunately, something happened and her mind seems to be trapped there while her body is in a state of coma in the real world. Blinded by anger, Takeda placed her body in a water tank to keep her alive via liquid breathing, while using his freezing technologies in tracking down the Guardians and trying to kill them. He is assisted by a mysterious boy from the Fast World, named Liam, whom met Mariko and fell in love with her. Liam acted as a spy on the W.I.T.C.H. girls for Takeda, infiltrating their magical school bus and planting evil and dangerous creatures from his world into Heatherfield in order to attack W.I.T.C.H. and putting their magical students in danger. Matt, not trusting Liam, followed him to Takeda's company where he was captured and frozen in an ice prison by Takeda's merciless robots. Later, Takeda ordered Liam to kidnap Will's infant brother, William, in order to lure the Guardians in the Fast World. Taking the bait, the Guardians rushed to Takeshita's Inc. and followed Liam's trail into the Fast World, only to have Takeda sealing off the exit. Shinobu, Takeda's younger daughter, spied and discovered her father's cruel deeds, and in turn betrayed her father by accidentally having him frozen by his robots and she then, crawled into the icy portal into the Fast World. In the Fast World, the Guardians discovered that a cruel and malicious ruler, Arkaam the White Queen, wishes to rule over all magic in the Fast World. Mariko's mind saw her cruelty and stayed in that world to help the Black Army fight for peace as their new Black Queen. However, her lover, Liam, was stabbed by the White Queen's sword and shattered into pieces when he sacrificed himself to save the one girl he loved most. The girls escape with the conscience of Mariko, William, and Shinobu back to the real world where only a few minutes have past; but it being late, the girls were still scolded by their parents. Arkaam finds a piece of one of the W.I.T.C.H. girls lamia threading- magical clothing that make up their costumes- and uses it to try and enter Earth. The girls put the town to sleep and fight the evil queen and are victorious. Takeda ends his vendetta on magic after the return of his family and the girls return to a semi-normal life with their own families.

In this series, every issue has a different story. The girls have to face their daily problems, such as stories of each of their fathers- with Will's stepdad Dean turning out to be a retired rock star- and dangerous enemies such as the Runics - five magical boys with powers similar to the girls but filled with dark magic, or Nihila, the evil queen of fate. The Earth gives the girls a warning of impending dangers by using their respective elements. Nihila begins to dictate everyone's lives, except the girls who are immune to her magic, so Nihila tries to ruin their lives by harming their loved ones. To end this, the girls head to Nihila's lair and after a cruel test of the elements- with Will, Irma, Taranee and Cornelia turned to stone by their emotional flaws preyed upon by Nihila (with Will being turned so easily because she doesn't have an element but unites the others powers)- Hay Lin defeats the evil sorceress by coming to terms with herself, her element's power, her desire for love and her destiny. The captain of the Runics, Nashter, arrives as a new student at the Sheffield Institute to execute a plan of revenge against the girls - who had foiled the Runics' plan to win a magic staff in a contest on Nune-Boreal, which could have been used in an attack on Kandrakar. On Resurrection Day, where the Earth's voice is spoken once every 1,000 years, the girls powers go haywire and make them try to hear the Earth. Yan Lin explains that if the girls don't answer by days end, the Earth will scream to be heard for eternity- resulting in major disasters. The girls use their magic to repair the pollution and destruction caused by people, only to fail each time. They soon realize that by simply conserving power, using less water, reducing the heating bill, recycling, car-pulling, and "thinking green", they have answered the Earth with their compassion for the preservation of the environment and the things in it. At days end, Mother Earth thanks Yan Lin for the girls listening to her and will return in another 1000 years. Later the girls meet Mareeve, a Saarineen who fled from Orristurr, king of the sharks, who wants to marry her and annex her kingdom with his.

Based on special occasions Specials are made about the Witch girls. So far, the following special issues have been released:
Each Guardian's powers are fueled by Kandrakar, transmitted to the Heart via the Aurameres (the physical representations of the Guardians' powers). The Aurameres grant the same powers to each of their guardians; for instance, powers held by Irma would also have been possessed by Cassidy.
When the Guardians transform, they change form and grow wings. Contrary to the TV series, the wings don't allow them to fly, except after they get the New Powers.
Teletransportation can be performed from one spot to another on earth as well as teletransporting from planet to planet.
Kandrakar is a dimension in the center of the Universe, where time and space do not exist. In the fortress the wisest of many worlds are gathered to discuss the state of the worlds which are of their concern. They simply observe and do not interfere.
Meridian is a world ruled by the Escanor, who originates from Earth. For a long time Meridian was isolated from the rest of the universe because it was ruled by the evil prince Phobos. With help of the Guardians and the Meridian people the rightful heiress to the throne, Elyon, could reign again. Elyon is the last of the Escanor.
Arkhanta is an Earth-like world ruled by Ari. Ari accused the Oracle for not wanting to cure his son. Even the banshee Yua was unable to help him. With trickery, Ari could keep Yua in his scarlet citadel forever. Despite all this, Ari brought prosperity to his people. Knowing they had received everything thanks to the powers of Yua, the people are both happy and disturbed. Fortunately, after the Guardians released Yua and healed Ari's son Maqui, any threat of Yua's anger was over. On his turn Ari ended his hostility against Candracar.
Basiliade is the homeworld of the Oracle (Himerish), Orube and We. It makes part of a binary solar system.
The Fast World exists in a dimension where speed is high enough to be invisible to human's eyes and which cannot be measured. Its nature resembles that of the Calabi-Yau manifold. The inhabitants are humanoid, living in a society which looks like a mixture of the renaissance and the early years of the twentieth century.
A world inhabited with people with elvish ears who possess minor magical powers and whose technology is mixed with magic. To the Guardians' surprise, they prove to have fans there, and there is much W.I.T.C.H. merchandise to find, from dolls to DVDs.
The issue in which nune-Boreal's are introduced hasn't been sold in Sweden (yet) but still, the issue "Teamwork" was recently in which Nashter is appearing on Earth and the girls mention that he and his people are their worst enemy. (2011-10-10)
