2011-12 OFC Champions League |
The OFC Champions League, known as O-league is premier football competition in Oceania. It is organized by OFC, Oceania football governing body. It is organized since 2007 under current format, and it is successor of Oceania Club Championship. Four O-league titles have been won by teams from New Zealand and only one was won by team from other country - Papua New Guinea champion Hekari United won competition in 2009-2010 season, beating New Zealand team Waitakere United and becoming first Pacific team to won it.
At first, this competition was played as a single playoff match between champions of New Zealand and Oceania. That competition was held in 1987 and Adelaide City won the inaugural season.
Then 12 years pause came, until OFC organized next, all Oceania cup. In January 1999 Oceania Club Championship was held in Fijian cities of Nadi and Lautoka. Nine teams took part, with Australian side South Melbourne won the trophy. They also qualified to next year's FIFA Club World Cup.
Next competition was held two years later, with again Australian team wining the title. Wollongong Wolves won it, beating Vanuatu representative Tafea in final.
Two more editions were held under this name and format, with Sydney and Auckland City wining titles.
OFC decided to change competition format, and name, so next edition will be known as OFC Champions League
The Oceania Club Championship was played on one or two venues, in one host country. It was played with two or three groups with single round-robin format, semifinals and final. It usually lasted about 10 days, with matches being played every 2 days.
OFC decided to change competition format, to make it's main competition more interesting and more important to competing clubs, to make it as similar as possible to European Champions League, most famous club competition.
The OFC Champions League consists of two groups of 4 teams each, with double round-robin format.
First two seasons saw competition with two groups of 3 teams each, and from third edition onwards it consists of two groups of 4 teams each. Group winners progress to the final, played in double playoff format, with winner wining the title. Unlike previous format, O-League last more than a half year, starting in October and ending next year, in April.
O-League winner qualifies to FIFA Club World Cup, entering competition in playoff round.
As only seven OFC members take part in O-League, OFC board proposed format changes. It is proposed, in 2011, that champions of four remaining (developing) countries, would start playing their own cup, called OFC Cup, with winner winning berth in next season's O-League preliminary round. This is possible to happen in period till 2015.
Also, as one Oceanic team, Wellington Phoenix of New Zealand takes part in Australian league and can not take part in Asian Champions League, there are proposals to allow them to take part in O-League. This is also likely to happen in next few years.
